Third Crusade & Kartini – From Darkness to Light: History-Driven Games Launched on Kickstarter by Ion Game Design
Stockholm-based Ion Game Design has recently launched a Kickstarter campaign for two history-based tabletop games, “Third Crusade” and “Kartini – From Darkness to Light”. The campaign has already surpassed its initial goal of $10,778, reaching $15,253 with 194 backers and 16 days still to go.
“Third Crusade” is a strategic battle game set in the 1190s during the Third Crusade, a significant period in the history of the Holy Land. Players assume the roles of either the Muslim or Crusader Alliance, vying for control of regions and defeat of enemy armies. The game progresses over three years, divided into four rounds, each consisting of five phases. The ultimate objective is to accumulate Glory points, with the game ending once an alliance reaches 10 Glory points.
In contrast, “Kartini – From Darkness to Light” is a game rooted in Indonesia’s struggle for independence in the early 1900s. It is set against the backdrop of the nation’s nascent education system. The game’s namesake, Kartini, was an Indonesian national heroine and advocate for female education, emphasizing the game’s theme of progress through learning.
“Kartini – From Darkness to Light” is played over three rounds with three distinct phases. Players can choose from a variety of actions such as hiring a teacher, recruiting pupils, registering students, gathering books, graduation, advancing on the “From Darkness to Light” track, and passing. These actions further the game’s narrative, underscoring the pivotal role of education in the nation’s fight for freedom.
Both games are remarkable in their attempts to bring history to life through immersive gameplay. They invite players to step into different periods, understand the struggles, strategies, and progress of the era, and make critical decisions that can influence the course of history.
The Kickstarter campaign is set to run until June 26, 2023, offering an opportunity for history and gaming enthusiasts to back these unique tabletop games.
