Magpie Games Launches Kickstarter for “Ruins & Expeditions,” a New Expansion for Root: The Roleplaying Game

Magpie Games has launched a Kickstarter for “Ruins & Expeditions,” the latest expansion for “Root: The Roleplaying Game.” This expansion enriches the world of the Woodland with new factions, intriguing playbooks, and mechanics centered around exploring ancient ruins and securing lost relics.

In “Ruins & Expeditions,” players can join two new factions—the Hundred and the Keepers in Iron. Each faction brings a unique perspective and agenda to the Woodland’s ongoing conflicts. The expansion also introduces four new playbooks: the Hunter, Gourmand, Scourge, and Dealer.

The 160+ page hardcover book not only adds new characters and factions but also deepens the game’s world with new clearings such as Longbarrow Crag and Pricklegrass Marsh. These areas offer new narratives and challenges, enriching the game’s strategic and role-playing elements. The expansion introduces delve mechanics that push players to explore the depths of ruins, where they must manage their resources carefully and navigate the dangers lurking below to unearth ancient treasures.

“Ruins & Expeditions” also broadens the game’s bestiary with terrifying new monsters drawn by Kyle Ferrin, adding a layer of challenge and excitement. These creatures, ranging from giant fish to fearsome beetles and swarms of dragonflies, make the deeper parts of the Woodland perilous but rewarding for brave explorers.

The Kickstarter campaign for “Ruins & Expeditions” has been a success, quickly surpassing its initial goal of $20,000. As of now, it has raised $103,667 with the support of 1,162 backers and will continue to accept pledges until October 4th.
