Mongoose Publishing Assumes Ownership of Traveller from Marc Miller
Mongoose Publishing has officially acquired the Traveller franchise from its creator, Marc Miller. This transition, finalized in January but only recently disclosed, coincides with the lead-up to the game’s 50th anniversary in 2027.
The discussions regarding the future of Traveller between Miller and Mongoose began several years ago, culminating in a formal purchase agreement early this year. The delay in announcing the transfer was a strategic choice, requested by Miller to focus attention away from the ownership change and toward the game’s ongoing development and legacy.
Matthew Sprange of Mongoose Publishing noted the challenges of maintaining confidentiality over the past seven months and expressed no surprise that the information eventually became public.
Mongoose has committed to continuing the development of Traveller 5th edition (T5) with Miller’s involvement. The company also plans to maintain the availability of previous editions in digital formats and may update these editions as resources allow.
Significant changes include incorporating Mongoose’s Traveller editions into the Fair Use Policy, facilitating broader community engagement, and third-party projects.
Mongoose intends to reintegrate various third-party Traveller titles into the franchise, following efforts to ensure that all contributions are cohesive within the Traveller universe. The company has initiated contact with several creators to ensure proper recognition and compensation for their work.
Despite the ownership change, Miller remains actively involved in the development of Traveller-related projects. Mongoose is incorporating his ideas into a new project closely related to the Traveller universe, ensuring his influence continues to shape the franchise.
