D&D Beyond Announces Transition Plan for 5.5E Ruleset Update
D&D Beyond has outlined its strategy for updating the digital toolset to the upcoming 2024 edition of the D&D 5.5E Player’s Handbook, as described by Wizards of the Coast. This announcement clarifies the modifications and continuities in the toolset with the release of the new ruleset.
Updates in the 5.5E Transition
The upcoming edition will revise numerous elements of Dungeons & Dragons, including base classes, spells, and monster stat blocks. D&D Beyond’s updates will start with the early access phase of the 2024 Player’s Handbook and will extend beyond the release of the 2024 Monster Manual.
Key updates will include:
- Gameplay and Material Updates: Definitions related to core gameplay, such as Armor Class and Saving Throws, as well as details regarding skills and abilities, will be updated across D&D Beyond. Updates will also touch on tooltips and linked materials in the compendium.
- User Interface Enhancements: Changes in the user interface will update monster stat blocks and character sheets to align with the new ruleset.
Continuity of 2014 Content Access
D&D Beyond has confirmed that users will retain access to the 2014 edition content. This includes classes, subclasses, species, backgrounds, feats, and monsters, which will be marked with a “Legacy” badge to denote their status relative to the new edition.
Impact on Homebrew Content and Legacy Designation
The majority of homebrew content will remain unchanged except where it integrates updated tooltips. Items and content from earlier editions that are superseded by the 2024 rules will receive a Legacy badge, indicating their adherence to older rules or lore.
Compatibility with 2014 Materials
The new system will maintain compatibility with materials from the 2014 ruleset, albeit with some restrictions. For example, while players can still use older spells and magic items, they may need to recreate these as homebrew content to integrate them with the 2024 ruleset.
