Onyx Path Publishing recently unveiled “At the Gates,” their latest venture into the realm of high fantasy games. Inspired by JRPGs and classic epic fantasy literature, the game is set on the magical continent of Everend in the world of Gaia. Here, magic is a fundamental aspect of life, maintaining harmony across the continent. However, this balance is threatened as the game begins with a dramatic demonstration of power where one nation summons daemons from rends in the Void, disrupting centuries of peace.
The game’s backdrop is a world bracing for conflict as nations rush to harness daemonic magic, fearing the destruction and chaos these new powers might bring. Common folk are caught in the middle, anxious about the encroaching war and the terrifying might of the daemons. As the gates between the Void and Gaia spill open, the land and its creatures are tainted, transforming wildlife into ravenous beasts and threatening the lives of all inhabitants.
“At the Gates” encourages players to become heroes who navigate these troubled times, offering a rich narrative filled with political intrigue, ancient mysteries, and high stakes roleplay. The game serves as the second core rulebook in Onyx Path’s Earthbane Cycle, following the successful launch of “The World Below,” which previously raised over $60,000 on Backerkit.
The game introduces updated gameplay mechanics through the Storypath Ultra rules system, emphasizing roles like Diviner, Harrier, Mage, Warlord, and Warrior for character development. Players will encounter various monsters and daemons, with opportunities to create their own creatures and even negotiate with or summon daemons.
A BackerKit crowdfunding campaign is set to launch on May 7th to support a traditional print run and special deluxe versions of the game. “At the Gates” is also available in an Ashcan preview edition on DriveThruRPG.com, where it has already achieved notable sales.
