Steamforged Games’ designer and product owner, Sherwin Matthews, has announced the upcoming release of the company’s latest tabletop game, Sea of Thieves: Voyage of Legends. The game has been developed in collaboration with Rare and will offer players an open-world 4X-lite experience set in the world of the popular video game, Sea of Thieves.
Matthews has promised to share the game’s development process with fans in a series of articles, including its rules, mechanics, and design concepts. He will also be showcasing some of the game’s assets, such as cards and tiles, to give players a taste of the game’s look and feel.
To create the game, the Steamforged Games team first mapped out the “core DNA” of the property, delving deep into the world of Sea of Thieves to understand what makes it unique. Matthews emphasizes that the game’s character is what sets it apart from other pirate-themed games, and they worked hard to maintain the flavor of the video game throughout the development process.
Combat in Sea of Thieves: Voyage of Legends will feature dice mechanics and special items like Blunderbombs, but the team made sure not to go down too “crunchy” a route, keeping things simple and easy to understand. The game will also feature a multi-stage fight against the Kraken, with players having to decide whether to fight it for loot and reputation or flee before their ship is destroyed.
