Dungeons & Dragons Celebrates 50th Anniversary at Lucca Comics & Games 2024

Lucca Comics & Games will mark the 50th anniversary of Dungeons & Dragons with a series of events running from October 26 to November 3, in Lucca, Italy. The celebration will include an extensive art exhibition, along with a unique tribute to the creators of the game, Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson.

A central feature of the event is the art exhibition titled “Gateway to Adventure: 50 Years of D&D Art”. Curated by D&D historians Jon Peterson and Jessica Lee Patterson, the exhibit will showcase works from the Koder Collection. It will include pieces by artists such as Keith Parkinson, Larry Elmore, Jeff Easley, and Todd Lockwood, as well as the first variant D&D manual cover, designed by John Blanche.

As part of the celebrations, Lucca will name the underground of the San Paolino bastion in honor of D&D creators Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson. The dedication ceremony will take place on October 30, with city authorities and Luke Gygax, son of Gary Gygax, in attendance.

Throughout the event, attendees will have the chance to participate in various gaming sessions, panels, and workshops featuring notable figures from the D&D community. Artists such as Tyler Jacobson and Erol Otus will be present, offering discussions on the visual evolution of the game.
