Pelgrane Press has initiated a Kickstarter campaign for the second edition of 13th Age, a tabletop RPG recognized for merging d20-rolling mechanics with a strong narrative focus. The new edition aims to refine the gameplay experience, boasting overhauled class powers and enhanced combat dynamics.

The update emphasizes a more strategic approach to character abilities, ensuring a balance of power across all classes. Each class’s spells, powers, and talents have been revised to provide a range of effective options for players. Moreover, monster mechanics have been redesigned to offer a dynamic and unpredictable combat experience, enriching the engagement for both players and the GM.

Narrative elements of the game have also been deepened. Characters’ backstories and relationships with powerful icons in the game world are now more integral to the story’s progression, offering players a deeper immersion into their role-playing experience.

The second edition introduces two separate core rulebooks: the Player’s Handbook and the Gamemaster’s Guide. The Player’s Handbook will focus on character creation, classes, and combat rules, while the Gamemaster’s Guide will provide essential information on running the campaign, including advice on monsters and treasures.

Compatibility with previous 13th Age content is maintained, allowing players to integrate older expansion and adventure materials with minimal adjustments. This ensures that long-standing fans can transition to the new edition without rendering their existing collections obsolete.

The artistic direction of the second edition remains a highlight, with Lee Moyer and Aaron McConnell contributing to the full-color artwork. The campaign has also unlocked several stretch goals, including digital enhancements and physical gaming aids like custom dice and detailed maps.
