Wizkids announces the expansion of our Star Trek offerings with the release of Star Trek HeroClix: Tactics.

From their announcement:

Star Trek HeroClix: Tactics puts you in command of Federation and Klingon vessels and is 100% compatible with the HeroClix core rules system. Tactics is intended as a standalone game system and will exist outside of the Modern and Golden Age tournament environments. What this mean is Tactics operates by the same rules and Powers and Abilities card that your standard HeroClix game is played with, but is meant to be played as its own game.

Tactics features more than 20 pre-painted ships from both the Federation and Klingon affiliations and will be available for sale in both a 4-Ship starter product and single figure boosters. For more details, please refer to our Retailers Downloads section.

Wow, looks like they are just taking the same ships from the Fleet capatains board game, painting them up and releasing em as a new product lol.

These aren’t even product shots. The file names on the pictures indicate they are just renders.

I only wish that Amarillo had the rights to these new generations of Star Trek ships, so the miniatures could be made by them. Plastic clicky collectable is an anathema to me and I wish a game with a long history of strategy and the Star Trek name was the venue through which new Trek miniatures would appear. No doubt it was upfront licensing money, though. Can’t beat the mullah when it comes to the licensing, apparently.

These people are a business. Businesses try to make money.
Clicky plastic ships will bring in orders of magnitude more money than everything ADB has done ever.

If it was my license I’d be doing clicky plastic ships too. You’d be stupid not to.

Yes, yes. Well, maybe ADB can get into the Clicky business for money. They’d probably do a better job and the money they made would flow, hopefully into their other stuff.

On the other hand, if you really were only about making money, I’d ask what the hell are you doing in the game business? Unless you want to be in the game business AND make money. Because if you were only about making money, you do not want to be in the game business, I promise you.

You can make good money from games. Ask Hasbro about that. But it requires that you be in the branch of gaming that you can put on the shelves at Wal-Mart and Toys R Us.

There’s a mainstream game market and there’s a hobby market, and this product is for the former, whereas ADB is in the latter. If ADB is in this for the money then they’re doing it wrong.

Cut+paste ‘old FASA Battletech’ vs ‘Wizkids Mechwarrior clix’ argument tbh.

SFB has always been about the old school. ADB are reprinting old material for old gamers looking for a nostalgia kick. As far as I can determine ADB have found their niche and buying permission to cast models of new ships isn’t going to be profitable or desired. Leave it to Wizkids for now please.

I think you can only speculate that it wouldn’t be profitable or desired. And I’d disagree with that. However, there’s this site called TGN, and they recently posted this:

I hope this leads to a nice little growth spurt for ADB.

Since the only thing I found vaguely appealing about Fleet Captains was picking up a couple of the ships to use elsewhere, I am very pleased to see that they are (apparently) releasing the ships separately. Saves me the trouble of buying all that extra stuff I don’t need.

Available Feb 2012. I will be picking some up, for sure.

Finally, I can find out once and for all who would win in a fight: Superman, Ryu or the Enterprise!

      Or Cthulu

      • winter

No need. Cthulu wins hands down.

          Or perhaps tentacles down. 🙂

          • Paconious

Or Master Chief or Batman? My money is on Batman.

I guess close combat actions represent marine boarding parties? Looking over Heroclix powers it’s surprising that they can all be applied to a Star Trek style ship battle game. Even things like Mind Control could be explained by telepathic crew members (?)… okay, it’s a stretch but Star Trek has never been about the hard science.

I’ll probably pick these up for the ships, not the game. Then I’ll figure out a better system to play the game in. Hopefully, they’ll have some expansions that include Romulans, Cardassians, Dominion, and Borg. It would be a lot of fun to do a Dominon war campaign.
