Having a pre-made adventure ready to go can make the life of a GM infinitely easier. You can just pick up and go with it, only having to tweak it to fit your game as opposed to creating something from scratch. Or, they can be used as a weekend one-shot when you want to do something different. Whatever way you use them, they're a good time, and a new one is up on Kickstarter now. Lair of the Battle Mage is an old-school-style adventure where players are heading into the lair of an "old and feeble" battle mage... that's been old and feeble for decades, but still apparently packs a punch. The book is up on Kickstarter now.
From the campaign:
Tavern Tales #1: Lair of the Battle Mage is a complete 32-page mini-adventure delivered in the format of the classic gaming zine (5.5" x 8" size) -- hand sketched art, graph paper map, faux typewriter-style storyline and plot details, and fun props for the players to hold and examine. All this is wrapped up in a folded and stapled traditional fanzine that will deliver some nostalgia to old-school fantasy RPG players and a fun way for new players to experience the joys of the early days of fantasy RPG gaming.
I have fond memories of reading through gaming zines when I was younger, and I even made some of my own. These were typically done during class, on notebook paper, and in pencil. (And I'd pay handsomely if I found one that survived middle school!) Low budget, for sure, but so fun to make and share with my gaming friends.
To honor the fun and uniqueness and rarity of the handmade, old school fanzines that have survived from the 70s and 80s, no more than 300 physical copies of Tavern Tales #1: Lair of the Battle Mage will be printed and mailed to backers. I'm going old school -- I'll be printing them, folding them, stapling them, and mailing them. I've created the 300 limit because I can only print, assemble and ship so many in the month of October. (Yes, more of Niloshis' tales may make an appearance in future zines, but not this one. Read it, play it, and then tuck it away for someone to discover in a few decades or more.)
For Tavern Tales #1, the story revolves around an infamous battle mage who is feeble and dying... and has been dying for over 50 years. His lair is rumored to be filled with treasure and magic items from his years of dungeon delving, but most of the eager and extremely impatient adventurers who have gone in for a look (and maybe a quick bit of looting) have not come out. Those who did make it out have verified that the battle mage is even more feeble. And still dying. Maybe now is the time for a brave party to enter the lair of the battle mage and see what wonders await?
NOTE: The adventure is for characters of level 1-5. A separate PDF will be made available that offers suggestions to the GM for modifying the adventure to suit specific levels and customizing the difficulty of encounters.
The campaign's halfway to its goal with 12 days left to go.
