Friends! Gamers! Countrymen! Lend me your… uh… eyes. I have not come to bury anybody. And we’ll see if I praise anybody (spoilers, I will). SoulJar Games has been busy working on a new board game that captures all the intrigue and subterfuge of the ancient Roman Senate. What they’ve came up with is 100AD. They’ve sent me a prototype copy to look over and give you my thoughts on (note: Since it's a prototype, the look of cards and wordings may change before the final version).

So grab your toga and sandals, it’s time for another TGN Review. This time it’s 100AD by SoulJar Games.
Wow! Gen Con got off to quite a start this morning! Seemed no sooner than I was awake than I was down at the hall looking over some things when Boom! The doors were opened! It was quite a mad rush in the hall. I don't know actual numbers, but several people I talked with and I all agreed that this year seems even busier than last (and that was a record-setting year for attendance).
SoulJar has launched their Kickstarter campaign for Gondola, their new tile-placement and racing game. Players are trying to reach the finish line first, but the twisting and turning canals of Venice are tricky to navigate. It's hard to even know where the finish line is at first!

From the campaign:
Ooooh soooolooo miiiiooo!
SoulJar Games has announced a new upcoming board game, Gondola. Race your fellow gondoliers through the canals and make it to the 5 checkpoints first. The one catch is that you'll never know what's coming up next, as the canal map will change every game. With tile artwork by Alyssa "the Roman" Faden, the game will be making its way to Kickstarter later this year.

From the post:
Hey there gaming buddies, it's time again for another Sunday Snippets here on TGN.

So what's happening? We've got some photos of Medrin cast in resin resin, Torn Armor gives us an update of their 3D renders with Reaper, a look at some new 10mm terrain from War Mage Games, a new release from Hitech Miniatures, some new template colors from Micro Art Studios, and more.

As usual, here's the reviews we found during the week.
There's quite a few of them. We've got a pair of reviews for Blurble, a look at Dice Crawl from SoulJar Games, an Imperial Assault unboxing, a look at Rivet Wars, a review of the Malifaux terrain by PlastCraft, and more! Check it out.

What is that you are ripping?

For regular readers of TGN, you no doubt remember the rather rocky road that SoulJar Games had gone through in order to get Torn Armor out to the world. Well, the base game has finally been created and shipped out to backers. The Roman and The Elf of SoulJar were kind enough to give me a copy of it to check out. I was rather excited to get one, so let’s tear into another TGN Review. This time, it’s Torn Armor from SoulJar Games.
SoulJar Games gives you more ways to play their Dice Crawl game with new, free optional rules for advanced solo play and an Ironman Mode (you don't actually play as Ironman, though that would be cool).

Dice Crawl

From the website:

Hi Dice Crawl players! Postworldgames Jim Pinto - the designer behind Dice Crawl - has come up with two new optional rulesets for your Dice Crawl games: an Ironman Mode and Advanced Solo Play rules!

Ironman introduces elimination rules and a lower dice count than maybe you are used to: it's Yahtzee meets a gladitorial contest and players aim to eliminate each other from the game.

The Advanced Soloplay Rules introduces three different gaming 'personalities' and play styles for your AI opponents! How will you beat them?

SoulJar Games has released the digital version of their Cairn RPG book up online for your downloading and gaming pleasure.

Book of Cairn

From the release:

SoulJAR Games is proud to announce the release of the digital version of the Cairn RPG. This tabletop roleplaying game is available in .pdf format from DriveThru RPG. The RPG was written by Ross A. Isaacs, Paul Caughill, James Silverstein, and Mike Nystul, and includes the fantastic art of Jeff Laubenstein and Alyssa Faden. The price is $9.99.

“I’ve been working on this for a long time. I’m glad it’s finally out and in the hands of fans. I’m looking forward to hearing what people do with it.” Ross A. Isaacs said.
SoulJar has just a couple hours left on Kickstarter for their Dice Crawl dungeon crawl game. They've had a nice surge going on, unlocking more classes and races in the past day.

From the campaign:

Whoooo, what a way to bring in 2014! Thank you wonderful backers for an absolutely amazing surge here at the end of the Dice Crawl Kickstarter!

SoulJar has posted up some new races for people to vote on for their Dice Crawl Kickstarter campaign.

From the update:

Dear Backers,

Wow, two updates in less than half an hour. My apologies for the spam, but this is the place where we vote on the Race to add to the boxed set of Dice Crawl (because we hit 250 backers yesterday). Many of you jumped into the voting thread and these were the ones we decided to turn into cards and abilities.

SoulJar only has a couple days left for their Dice Crawl campaign on Kickstarter. They've also just unlocked more pieces for the game. They're also holding voting on the next unlocked race.

From the update:

NEW RACE ADDED:Today we hit 250 backers (thank you!) which locks down the last "+1 Race vote."

Well the Dragonkin was popular, but the Goblin was even more so and on a vote of 18 to 13 the Goblin won! So from this point forward the Goblin card will be added to every boxed game (diceless, core game, or collector's editions). Congratulations to all of our backers for the new card (we here at SoulJAR *LOVE* adding free content to the game, we really do!)

As a reminder, we have added the Explorer (Class), Centaur, Lizardman and Goblin (as races) and have TWO class votes currently ongoing:

SoulJar has made it to their funding goal over in their Dice Crawl Kickstarter campaign. So it's stretch goals for the next 10 days.

From the campaign:

1 - Dice Crawl will now be available in 1-4 players. When funded we will be adding rules for solo-play.

2 - We will be adding a 24"x24" Gripmat with Dice Crawl graphics. This will be an add-on for any backer. Watch this space for details on that.

3 - We are going to add TWO additional classes for all backers. These will be exclusive to this Kickstarter ONLY and we want YOU to tell us what classes you would like to see! Share your thoughts in the comments thread below!

4 - I am looking into the feasibility of unlocking TWO expansions in one go. This will require that it is funded privately (I'd foot the printing costs for it), but we want you guys and gals to get maximum enjoyment and value from this Kickstarter and game, so we'll be trying to make this happen for you.

SoulJar has a new class they're voting on over in their Dice Crawl Kickstarter. They're also getting ever-so-closer to their goal with still 2 weeks left to go.

From the update:

Another great day in the Dice Crawl kickstarter, my dear backers!

We are even closer to funding (just $400 at the time of writing .... ooooh, can you feel it?), we're only 31 backers from a new race, and today we got enough shares to unlock a new class!

So with the new class vote opened (see below), we have locked down the previous vote which was between the barbarian and the explorer. The explorer took it hands down, so all boxed sets (the game, dice or not) and above get this card added completely free!

SoulJar has a preview up of a tile for the stretch goal expansion Tomb of the Undying for Dice Crawl over on their Kickstarter page.

From the update:

Remember, all expansion sets come with 30 themed tiles. You shuffle these in with the core tile set and place down the 25 tiles as you normally would, but now you have the opportunity of turning up a special tile with special rules ...

Each expansion includes:

24 crypt tiles
2 new-rule reference tiles
2 new class tiles
2 new race tiles

SoulJar is more than 50% funded for Dice Crawl already. Thanks to the shares of the campaign, they've unlocked some new Classes and Races. Plus, they're showing off a bit about the rules.

From the update:

We've built in a great little incentive system which combines fun, momentum, and extra goodies for our backers. It takes the form of SHARES and BACKERS. If we hit x-amount of shares we'll add cards into the core box. If we hit y-amount of backers we'll add even more cards. Every box gets these extra cards completely free and we really want to give you as many cards as possible!

SHARES are free. They cost no one absolutely any thing. Get your friends and their friends to go to our homepage and hit the SHARE option at the top and they contribute towards the extra content. It's as easy as that.

SoulJar has launched a Kickstarter campaign for their new game, Dice Crawl, an abstract dungeon crawl adventure.

From the campaign:

Dice Crawl is a quick, fun dungeon-crawling tile game for 2 to 4 players. Players take on the roles of mercenary captains racing to get their team of adventurers to the center of the dungeon, while other captains race do the same thing. But, not all paths lead to the center and some teams may never find the glory they seek.

In Dice Crawl, players select a race and class for their mercenary captain before flipping tiles, rolling dice, and collecting their share of the dungeon treasure. Abstract game mechanics mix with flavorful graphics and theme to make dice crawl a fast, highly replayable game of luck and strategy.

SoulJar is showing off some more artwork for their Awakened Villagers of Cairn playing card set over on their Kickstarter campaign as well as gives us an update about the status of the campaign.

From the update:

My apologies for being quiet over the last few days. We have been investigating the possibility (i.e. costs) for making this gorgeous deck be Bicycle branded and the good news is that we can do it, and do it within our current budget. The bad news is that we figured this out a little late in the day and we're currently reworking the tuck-box accordingly. Of course, this takes time; there is a firm process and requirements to be met, but we are working feverishly to catch the tail end of this kickstarter.

The great news is that we had a huge influx of artwork from Jeff Laubenstein and colored pieces from Alberto Espinar. And - honestly - they are just too divine not to share. I was holding onto these to wait until they were dropped into place, but you know what I really need to show you these now =D

SoulJar is running a Kickstarter campaign in order to fund a set of Bicycle playing cards with unique artwork from the Cairn world.

From the campaign:

From the whimsical artwork of Jeff Laubenstein comes a playing card deck for everyone. Featuring such magical creatures of Cairn: mice, otters, badgers, and moles, the illustrations conjure mental images of Watership Down, Redwall, and Labyrinth.

It is an entirely custom deck with original artwork: every element from pips to courts is entirely unique and designed to capture the playfulness of the Cairn creatures.
