Every civilization has their own monuments. Edifices to their own power and greatness. They stand the test of time and many are known to us today. In Monuments, a new board game that's up on Kickstarter now, you'll take on the role of leader of one of these civilizations and build your own monuments to greatness. However, you can't just focus on building, as the rest of your empire needs tending, too.
From the campaign:
In Monuments, 2 to 4 players of age 10+ play as one of the ancient civilizations: Greek, Egyptians, Mayan and Incas. It is your goal to build your Monument as fast you can, but you can’t neglect your empire and your people. The game ends after the round in which one player finishes their Monument, but only the player with the most Victory Points wins the game!
Monuments offers a different take on the civilization genre. There are no ages, no tech trees, no advancement tracks, no long waits between turns, no 4 hour game, nor a 40 page rulebook. Instead, the focus is on building the Monuments. Each player has the same 10 action cards. A turn consists of one thing and one thing only. A player either plays and discards one of his 10 action cards, each with a simple and quick action, or takes all discarded action cards back in hand. This makes for very little downtime between turns. A game plays in about 30 minutes per player on average, depending on how familiar players are with the game and how much competition there will be in the end.
The game's around 1/3 of the way to its goal with 10 days left to go.
