Agricola is a classic board game masterpiece created by Uwe Rosenberg. Critics have praised Agricola’s rich gameplay, earning it major awards including Spiel des Jahres“Complex Game” 2008 and Golden Geek Board Game of the Year 2008. The digital adaption delivers not only all the depth of the original board game, but also provides all the improvements from the 2016 Revised Edition. This includes the rebalanced cards which were reworked by designer Uwe Rosenberg himself to get a better overall game feeling. Naturally, the digital version also benefits from a streamlined setup and convenient online multiplayer.
Set in Central Europe during the end of the Middle Ages, Agricola features a civilized world that was revitalized after years of shortage. In the game, all farmers wish for a better life and want to produce more and more food!
Choose an occupation in town to earn resources to enhance your wooden shack to a farmhouse! Plow your fields, sow with seeds and bake bread in your clay oven! Another way to get food is to find sheep, pigs or cattle in town and keep them in fences to breed small ones.
When your farm is large enough, it's time to think about having a baby! Your children will help you with your tasks as they grow up! Don't forget to stock up food for the wintertime or you will have to resort to begging in order to survive!
You can also choose specialties and improvements to take advantage of the other farmers!
The player with the biggest and greatest farm wins the game, so allocate resources wisely, develop your land carefully and create the best medieval farm!

And we once more find ourselves deposited here in Saturday. Yayweekend! I've already had some good gaming going on. Got a game of Guild Ball in right after work last night. Masons (me) vs. Butchers (Ray). Technically speaking, I won. But really, I lost. Ray fudged his activation order on the last turn and it allowed me to win, 12-10 against his Butcher. But, really, he should've won 12-6 or 12-10. Masons don't like going against a team that negates armor and does extra damage. As for today, got our first session of a new D&D game. Should be fun. Most of us haven't played 5th yet, so it'll be an interesting learning experience. But that's as may be. I know you're really all here to check out the reviews.
Today we have: Sushi Go Party, Legends of Andor: Part II Journey to the North, Knightmare Live, Agricola: Family Edition, La Granja, Schotten-Totten, Heir to the Pharaoh, The Godfather: A New Don, Neuroshima Hex: Dancer Expansion, and Arcane Academy.
theMCGuiRE review takes a look at Legends of Andor: Part II Journey to the NORTH! This is an excellent expansion and one of the first major expansions for Legends of Andor. This expansion features a water / island environment and a winter experience. The board is double sided and HUGE! The experience is epic and follows suit to the original award winning classic. If you are an Andor fan - pick this up soon, you will not regret it!
For those bespectacled nerds that did manage to wangle a go on one of the world’s first VR suites, complete with primitive 3D rendered Level 5 Wall Monsters, ropey actors contending with contestants who couldn’t solve a puzzle if it had the solution emblazoned in neon lettering on the far wall and a presenter who had such disdain for his contestants, he openly mocked them as they flailed around failing to solve the aforementioned puzzle. So, for anyone alive and under the age of 18 in the 80s and 90s, Knightmare proved to be essential viewing and probably started me on my path of screaming at TV contestants who showed less initiative than a tranquilised hippy after drinking 6 bottles of Buckfast.
Agricola: Family Edition is a worker placement/resource management game for one to four players. Players are farmers building up their farming infrastructure while also having to feed their families. The player with the most points wins.
On the island of Majorca, nestled among the hills in the village of Alpich is a small farm. Your farm. Island life is calm and peaceful, but don’t be fooled; the competitive spirit is alive and well in this sleepy Spanish town.
So you farm. You tend the pigs. You sow the fields. You hawk your wares. It’s hard work, but you’ve never been afraid of getting your hands dirty. In fact, if hard work were all that it took to be successful you’d be the best farmer there ever was. Unfortunately, Lady Luck is also against you and it’s up to you to tame her, because ward work isn’t enough on La Granja.
Schotten-Totten is a two-player hand management game. Players are rival clans fighting over territory boundaries in Scotland. The first player to claim five boundary stones or three in a row wins.
In Heir to the Pharaoh, one player will take on the role of the god Bast, while the other controls Anubis as they vie to take control of Egypt. Each round, players will be bidding to use the power of the gods to grant them special powers. These powers will let them build monuments, the pyramid and use animal magic in their quest for domination. Once the sun has made a full revolution around the board, the player with the most points will inherit Egypt and all its glory.
The arena for Godfather: A New Don (hereafter called just The Godfather) is set in the streets of Manhattan and Brooklyn during some fictional time when the mafia was just on the rise and Las Vegas was just getting started.
Players represent the heads of the five (plus one apparently for six players) families from The Godfather movie franchise. The game has players using dice to control neighborhoods that are part of various regions. The player that manages to control the most neighborhoods in each region scores a certain number of points aiming to be the overall point winner at the end.
Armies in Neuroshima Hex have always been fairly unique in their own right. Even in the base game, each of the four armies have their own strengths and weaknesses. And that’s one of the things I love about Neuroshima Hex, how different each army feels.
Well expansion designer Rustan Håkansson decided to crank up that unique feeling to the max with the Dancer expansion. This expansion takes everything you know about Neuroshima Hex and tosses it in a meat grinder. What came out was the three units of Dancer.
The goal in Arcane Academy is to acquire the most victory points. Players accomplish this by casting spells and crafting magical items. During the game players will be playing tiles onto their slate, which will determine what actions can be taken. With clever tile placement, players will be allowed to chain actions together, giving them more efficient turns. The spells and items cast will also give players special abilities to aid them in their quest at being the top student.
WizKids has been expanding out a bit lately from just their HeroClix and Dice Masters lines. Diversifying is good on a portfolio. That counts double when you're teaming up with a well-liked property.
WizKids has been expanding out a bit lately from just their HeroClix and Dice Masters lines. Diversifying is good on a portfolio. That counts double when you're teaming up with a well-liked property. In this case, it's Lookout Games and their Agricola game. The two companies are partnering to bring you new expansions.
These will be rather small packs, containing a pre-painted figure as well as unique cards in each expansion.
“We’re excited to work with Uwe and Lookout Games to bring new content to the Agricola franchise,” said Justin Ziran, president of WizKids. “Lookout Games brings a legacy of quality, style and innovative game play to the table and we couldn’t be happier to enhance Agricola with detailed, pre-painted figural & gameplay content.”
“We’ve been wanting to do painted figures for the family members for a while now and thought it would be great to couple them with new content for the game. We’re excited to be working with WizKids to make this a reality,” said Grzegorz Kobiela, editor at Lookout Games.
We'll be starting to see these expansion packs on store shelves near the start of next year.

*puts on Elton John garb* Saturday! Saturday! Saturday! Saturday! Saturday! Saturday! Saturday! Saturday! Saturday night's alright! Ok, so it's not actually Saturday night yet, but it will be soon (well, for me. Some of you are already well into Saturday night. Bloody time zones). Anyway, I know what you want. You want some reviews. So let's get to it.

theMCGuiRE review takes a look at Zombicide Black Plague from Coolminiornot Games ( CMON ). CMON is doing a great job with their titles and they just keep getting better and better with good game design and fun game play. This version of Zombicide features more of a fantasy theme ( which I really like). the characters are all very cool and I cant wait to get more of the expansions. Absolutely love the solo gameplay on this one!

Join Scott Bogen and Kev Sharp of The Big Board for this previously unreleased Warfare segment from the archives! With Kev asking the questions, Scott discusses and reviews in detail John Butterfield’s solitaire D-Day at Omaha Beach game published by Decision Games. Let’s begin now, shall we?
The kinship of beer and board games is a close one here at Collider Towers, to the point of the occasional ale-cardboard interface incidents, so when Board and Dice contacted us to ask us to playtest Beer Empire, we leapt at the chance faster than Twitter followers band together to ostracise neo-conservative policy. To add more fun to the proceedings, this playtest was conducted through the medium of the Internet over a session of Tabletopia. Once Jon and I got over the novelty of ski-ramp building from the multitude of components and lack of complex physics engine, we settled in for an evening of craft ale brewing, complete with hipster beards, pipes and man-buns.
The Undercity’s gameplay revolves around players working together to defeat the villains and achieve the scenario’s objective. Playing through a campaign will take many game sessions, allowing players to level-up their heroes and increase their abilities along the way.
You begin the game with a player board depicting your farm and the coal that’s yours for the taking. Your goal is to have the most victory points after 3 years which is accomplished mainly through the mining of coal, but as with any self respecting euro game, there are other ways to supplement your victory point total. Every year is broken up into seasons, the first three of which are action rounds and winter acting as the scoring and upkeep round.
The Pursuit of Happiness is a worker placement game that has you taking jobs, getting involved in projects/hobbies, engaging (and disengaging) in relationships, having a family, and participating in crass consumerism, all in an effort to create the happiest, best life for yourself before you drop dead.
At the start of the game, first determine which roles are included. Dracula is required, but the rest can be random – one role per player, plus one extra. The prototype includes 9 roles, so with the full player count you use every single one. Once the roles are decided (either by group choice or simply random shuffle), randomly deal the corresponding role cards secretly, one to each player.
Today, we are going to be looking at an offshoot from this fantastic worker placement game, called Agricola: All Creatures Big and Small (from hereto referred to as Agricola: ACBAS for brevity’s sake). While it doesn’t have the depth that Agricola does, Agricola: ACBAS still offers a great gaming experience for two players. It’s a bit lighter on the rules, yet still offers plenty to do. So let’s dive in and see if Agricola: ACBAS successfully made the transition to our tablets.
The life of a farmer in the pre-Industrial age is a struggle for sustenance and growth of family. Agricola: Family Edition replicates a farming family’s attempt to provide enough food for themselves, as well as increase their output of animals or wheat. The players compete with each other by placing workers to gather resources, corral animals, and build structures to increase their output as a whole.
Dwarf War is a light tactial game. It plays out over a 3D terrain of caverns, each with different layouts that produce resources in various amounts. In most scenarios you are trying to control a particular tower or take over your opponent’s base to win the game. It has a bit of resource management and a lot of tactical maneuvering.
In Get Rich Quick, players are trying to be the first to acquire 25 fortune points. Each round, players must choose three cards from their identical hand of 7 cards in the hopes of earning money and fortune points. Eventually, they can work their way over to the mall to buy upgrades in the form of special abilities that make their action card plays even stronger. Be the player with the most fortune points at the end of the game you win!

It's the Saturday before Gen Con. A week from now we'll be shoulder-deep in the show. Of course, that means this weekend is full of running around like a chicken with its head cut off, trying to get everything done before heading to Indy. But, even with all the brouhaha, there's time to bring you the reviews that you so desperately desire.
This week we have: Book of Nox Deluxe, Fishy Tactics, Agamemnon, Infinity Morat Rodoks, Tyrants of the Underdark, Scythe, Dungeon Busters, Dead of Winter: The Long Night, Portal: The Uncooperative Cake Acquistion Game, Vampire Hunters, Via Nebula, Antarctica, Titan Race, Agricola: Revised Edition, and Vikings on Board.
Scythe is the long-awaited and much-hyped 4X game from Stonemaier Games. The hefty box is packed with depth and a richly storied world. You will explore, expand, exploit, and exterminate. And you will also be immersed in a story told in few words, and a world that is both beautiful and haunting.
Now, I like cake. I don’t think I know anyone who doesn’t. Cake is one of life’s fantastic luxuries. It’s never a bad time for cake and it goes with pretty much any meal, snack or beverage. It’s like the friend everyone has who is always up for a beer no matter what day of the week it is. And like that friend, you’ll always end up consuming far too much, feel sick and regret it the next day as your gut grows steadily larger. But you’d do it all again in a heartbeat. Assuming it still beats after troughing a mountain of chocolate fudge.
The hordes of the undead and creatures of the night definitely go in and out of popularity faster than global hyper colour t-shirts. It's seems like only yesterday that Vampires where the undead du jour, there was a brief spate of werewolf popularity, then non-threatening vampires and now zombies are bloody everywhere, shambling about the place trying to catch Pokémon.
During the course of the game, the players’ main goal is to construct their 5 buildings. To do so, the must not only harvest resources from the game board, but also create paths to bring them to their building sites. When a player constructs a building, they will earn both victory points and also gain an immediate power they can use.
Once a player has built their fifth building, the game ends and the player with the most victory points is the winner.
Antarctica is an area control game for two to four players that takes place in Antarctica, approximately when our planet’s natural resources run low (i.e. the near future). The object of the game, like 93% of all Euros, is to collect the most victory points (VPs) by the end of the game.
Titan Race pits up to 6 players against each other in an aggressive and dangerous race to the finish line. The first player to complete three laps and cross that finish line claims victory!
Agricola is worker placement resource management game for one to four players. Players are farmers who are building a sustainable farm out of meager resources. The player with the most points at the end of the game wins.
Vikings on board combines elements of worker placement, area control, and action selection to create a game in which the object is to earn points by controlling valuable ships when they set sail, and placing bets on which clan will control a ship when it sails.
