Gulf Road Games has released Red Mists: Sword Against Sorcery, a new fantasy RPG that puts you in a realm where magic is generally evil, and you and your adventuring group need to make sure that such evil doesn't spread across the land. Grab your sword, spear, and arrows. It's time to go Conan on their butts.
The mechanics for the game are based on the Freeform Universal RPG. For tests, you start with a base die, add in a number of extra dice based on your skill, then subtract a number of dice based on the difficulty of the task at hand. If your skill is higher than the difficulty, you take the highest die you roll. If it's the other way around, you get the lowest die you roll. You want to roll high. For example, if you roll a 6, you succeed and something else good happens. Meanwhile, a 1 means that not only did you fail, but an extra bad thing happened. You can also Dismember, Impale, Crush, Eviscerate (DICE) your opponent. That is to say, with an attack you could chop off an enemy's arm or leg or slice up their torso pretty bad (all depending on what your other dice had rolled). And a good time was had by all.
You can pick up the game in .pdf format now.
