Mantic has teamed up with Topps and will be bringing us a Mars Attacks game.

From the announcement:

We’re pleased to be working with Topps on a new licensed Mars Attacks tabletop wargame, due for release in 2014! Here’s the full story:

Is your tabletop ready to be invaded? The Topps Company and Mantic Games have joined forces to bring MARS ATTACKS to life as a miniature-based tabletop war-game! Combining high quality sculpted figures with fast and fun tactical gameplay, Mantic will deliver an exciting new dimension to the resurgent sci-fi property.

Mantic Games, makers of the popular WARPATH and DREADBALL tabletop games, will make MARS ATTACKS their first license. “MARS ATTACKS is a cult classic series that fans have been falling in love with generation after generation,” says Ronnie Renton, Mantic CEO. “Its oddball blend of retro sci-fi visuals, dark humor and over-the-top violence will make for a unique tabletop experience… our team can’t wait to bring the Martians to life in ways no one has ever seen before!”

This could be a lot of fun. I’ll have to keep an eye out for more info.

I’m wondering what the human troops will look like. 1960s era or modern? If they design them well they might have some real crossover to over games.

  • As long as it isn’t designed by Alessio Cavatore I’ll be interested.

  • Grim6

For the love of all that’s loveable, I hope they’re 15mm!

    • ctaylor

      Agreed! 15mm sounds good.

  • 4tonmantis

28mm and please be so over the top that it’s ridiculous. Subtle rules really really really (really) do not fit this.

Current rumours do point towards a 15mm game.. probably the most practical size for doing the giant insects, machines and other things.

Especially if they sell them blindboxed in with the trading cards, it’s hard to imagine this as a non-collectible game considering the trading card tie-in.

    • Grim6

Ack. I hope not on the collectible. That never ends well…

My how times have changed. I’m asking others about Mantic rumours.
      What have you heard Squigs?
      😉

    GaK GAK!!!!!!

15mm and collectible? Just cancel it.

  • Wow – I see everybody is in agreement. ;D

Here is what’s gonna happen – Mantic will make it and it’s gonna sell whatever the format… Personally I don’t care one way or the other as long as there are some cool figures to paint.

  • Really hoping for 28mm so I can enjoy painting the martians and they can do clear helmets like the Flying Frog ones from Invasion From Outer Space.

  • wormwoode

I’m hoping for 28mm, too- but 15mm could be interesting, given the big walkers and saucers that show up in the property.

I read the same press release I believe everyone else has and I can find no mention of Alesio Cavatore’s involvement, 15mm scale, or any “blind package” collectible aspect.

@scarletsquig: Got any source for the rumors you mentioned?

Mantic isn’t big enough to do blind buy yet. It went horribly for Privateer Press with a similar style game, and they had to change format for that game. I also would like 28mm, in another year All Quiet might have a decent foothold in the alien attack category if they do things right (and it does look like a solid game). 28mm would set Mantic apart.

    • Haibane

Since when were Mantic about setting themselves apart? O__o

  • If it’s 28mm, I’m in. If it’s 15mm, I’m not.

  • wormwoode

I think I may actually be down with 15mm, on this one. I don’t currently do any 15mm stuff. Interested though. Thematically, this seems like a good candidate. My only concern would be how well they could pull off the requisite glass-dome helmets in 15mm.

  • scarletsquig

To clarify, 15mm scale confirmed. Collectible rampant baseless speculation. Sourced from someone who knew what that this was happening months ago. 🙂

  • blkdymnd

Well if its 15mm, I’ll be hesitant. It’s going to have to be REALLY good to get me to pickup 15mm

  • Damn there goes most of my anticipation for the miniatures. If I can’t paint the crazed look in their eyes what is the point. Sad Ack Ack

  • chrixter

15mm? Then I rather go with the All Quiet on the Martian Front kickstarter.

  • Well if you really want some Mars Attacks goodness for painting just get some Screamin’ models. They did a whole bunch of them in 1:6 or 1:8 scale. It’s probably cheaper too.

  • EasyEight

    Bummer — 15mm…
