You really can make an RPG based on just about any setting. We've seen plenty of ones based on various sci-fi and fantasy worlds, as well as many unique settings that defy classification. Malandros is certainly a setting I don't think I've ever heard of before, as you play as characters living in Rio de Janeiro at the end of the 19th Century. Yeah, a bit different than your usual game.
The game uses the DramaSystem rules engine, and drama really is the name of the game. Players will play as part of a tight-knit community who all know one-another in some form, even if they are at odds with one-another. Perhaps you're all family, or friends, or bitter rivals, or different gang leaders. The choices are yours.
The game is well past their funding goal (though they were only looking for $77, so that's not much of a surprise that they passed it). However, there's only 10 days to get in on the campaign if you're interested.
