For centuries, a mysterious gate on the planet Asteros has laid dormant. Any attempts to study or activate the gate ultimately proved fruitless. There are many theories about what it could be, including a portal to a parallel world or a way to instantly travel across the galaxy. Well, that gate has suddenly opened up. Cursory inspection seems to suggest that it wasn't something on this side of the gate that caused it to become active, and so now there's a worry that something unknown might want to come through. Something horrible. So now the race is on to try and close the gate before whatever's on the other side can make it here. That's the story behind Rising 5, a new board game that's up on Kickstarter.
In the game, players take on the role of heroes looking to close the gate on Asteros before whatever's on the other side comes through. They'll do this by arranging runes on the game board and then using an app to tell them whether they've gotten the runes right or not. But it's not just "guess and check," as you can gain clues as to the proper orientation of the runes by talking with the various inhabitants of the planet. But beware, as there are plenty of monsters lurking around that you'll have to avoid or defeat as well.
The Kickstarter campaign's up and running now. They're already at their goal, so it's on to going through stretch goals for the next 20 days.
