Well, Fantasy Flight is known for pulling out a big announcement while at Gen Con, and this is one of the biggest I can think of. They have announced Star Wars Legion, a new miniatures game based on the Star Wars universe.

From the announcement:

Shouts and screams echo around you—the din of pitched battle. The air smells acrid from blaster fire as lasers hiss past your squad. A scout trooper roars past on a 74-Z speeder bike, weaving between trees and firing at someone you can’t quite see through the underbrush. You raise your blaster and fire in the same direction, hoping to avoid any shrapnel. Ahead, you see Darth Vader, towering over a group of fallen Rebels strewn across the forest floor. He flicks his lightsaber forward, and your platoon charges…

Fantasy Flight Games is proud to announce Star Wars™: Legion, a new miniatures game of infantry battles that invites you to join iconic heroes and villains, lead your troopers into battle, and battle for the fate of the Star Wars galaxy. With Star Wars: Legion, you can build and paint a unique army of miniatures. You can command your troops in battle and devise masterful tactics. And you can conquer your opponent’s army to bring victory to the light side or the dark side!

With thirty-three unpainted and easily assembled miniatures, and all the cards, movement tools, tokens, and terrain that you need for battle, the Star Wars: Legion Core Set is the perfect way to bring Star Wars battles to your tabletop.

If you’re here with us at Gen Con 50 in Indianapolis, head to our booth to get your first taste of Star Wars: Legion, but in the meantime, read on!

    Shots fired, CMON! Shots fired!

Shots fired at CMoN? I thought they were shooting at 40k (given that FFG already has the top selling retail or KS minis game in X-Wing).

Makes me wonder if this was in the planning stages when FFG announced that they wouldn’t be working with Games Workshop IP anymore.

Or if they decided to do this after…

Probably after Runewars Mini game flopped?
Meh, it’s yet another Star Wars game I have no interest in.

Did Runewars flop? I know the initial run sold very well- and I know that the big issue people had with it was the lack of options.

I know that FFG pulls the plug a lot earlier than most, but I figured that it had done well enough for FFG to wait until they had a more complete game out to call it.

My LGS has about 10 copies of this still sitting on the shelves. I haven’t seen, nor heard of anyone playing it around these parts.
I’ve seen a few expansions at the LGS, and again they’ve been sitting there gathering dust.
I think the store is trying to push it, as they have some events scheduled, and a set painted up for demo.
I have yet to see it on a table, or being played however.

I wonder how regional that is.

Locally, I know some people who got into it right away. Then, after they played a little out of the box, decided to come back when the game is filled out a bit more.

It is possible that they all wandered away in the interim- you know how gamers get with their new shinies.

          • Haven’t seen any community for it in the midwest yet.

copies are at the shops sitting in stacks.

I’d try it or at the least demo it if I could find a sample copy.

But what happens to all the people with Imperial Assault? Looks like the minis are in that 25mm range as well.

Oh, if they had just gone the HALO route and done them in 15mm….

“But what happens to all the people with Imperial Assault?”

      – Nothing?
      – They keep playing Imperial Assault if they want?

      • jeff fearnow

Fair point, unless IA is dropped from support for reasons of obvious overlap.

        • Chad_Caughmann

Other than being Star Wars themed, and having miniatures, there’s not much overlap.
          – IA is a story based board game, loosely related to a dungeon crawler with multi-scenario progression.
          – Legions is a tabletop miniatures combat game.

Board games and tabletop miniatures games typically aren’t a big threat to each other. As long as IA remains profitable, this new game likely won’t affect it (IA has an established fan base and good overall game rating).

Yeah, there’s no more reason to think that Imperial Assault will be dropped for this than there is to think that Descent will be dropped due to Runewars.

Board games and Tabletop Miniatures games can live in peace and harmony.

Well the minis are coming unpainted, that’s a step in the right direction. They are still preassembled though.

I can’t wait to have an Ewok army destroy someone’s stormtrooper army.
