Fantasy Flight Games has announced a new Star Wars star ships battle game called Star Wars Armada.

From the post:

Fantasy Flight Games is proud to announce the upcoming release of Star Wars™: Armada, a two-player miniatures game of epic fleet battles in the Star Wars galaxy!

Massive Star Destroyers fly to battle against Rebel corvettes and frigates. Banks of turbolasers unleash torrential volleys of fire against squadrons of X-wing and TIEs. Engineering teams race to route additional power to failing shields. Laser blasts and explosions flare across the battlefield. Even a single ship can change the tide of battle.

In Star Wars: Armada, you assume the role of fleet admiral, serving with either the Imperial Navy or Rebel Alliance. You assemble your fleet and engage the enemy. Using the game’s unique maneuver tool, you steer your capital ships across the battlefield, even while squadrons of starfighters buzz around them. Then, as these ships exchange fire, it’s your job to issue the tactical commands that will decide the course of battle and, perhaps, the fate of the galaxy.

Looks good! The movement tool and bases look a little clunky, although I should think that the components will be as high quality as those in the X-wing game.

This is going to sell like hotcakes!

I have more interest in this scale of battle than X-wing. Models look sharp and better overall than the WOTC game (and the relative scales of fighter vs. capital ship look better too!).

Pretty sure all of the pics on the Fantasy Flight page are CG, unless you’ve seen the models themselves elsewhere?

      • Marauder

Good point! I will remain hopeful though as the Xwing game has some nice minis that don’t seem to have the same warping problems as the old WotC game.

        • Haibane

Yeah I think it’s a pretty done deal that the components will be X-wing quality.

  • blkdymnd

Yep, my interest is much higher for this than for X-Wing. Cannot wait.

  • I agree with the others that this scale is more to my liking.
I’m one of, like, 5 people that actually liked the WotC Star Wars starships game (and still have a complete set). It was a bit simplistic, sure, but it was an alright-ish game.
I’m hoping this new one from FFG can fill in the void that’s been there since WotC dropped the ball on it.

I’m the reverse: X Wing is more my scale. But this new one looks quite handsome, I agree. It would be nifty to have some sort of campaign system that would let you use both games.

One more thing to mention, is that I think the inclusion of a Victory class SD in the starter bodes really well for the game. It’s a great choice and indicative of Fantasy Flight’s knowledge of the franchise (which we already knew from X-Wing of course).

    • Marauder

Agreed. Their starting off with relatively small capital ships on both sides. Was irritated when the WotC game started with the largest and most taste ships in the galaxy in the starter! Odd course the guys designing this game probably know all about the previous game!

The pictures only show 4 squadrons of fighters, but their page says it includes 10 squadrons, so that’s cool, I guess they didn’t want to have a picture swarming in flights of fighters?

Read elsewhere someone saying the price of this is going to be MSRP $100, is this for real? With the missing fighters not shown in the picture, its going to be much more plastic I see, but that is very steep sounding. Can’t imagine this being as big as a hit as X-Wing, but hopefully they are going for a more niche crowd? I dunno but that’s a scary starting price point for what doesn’t seem like alot of minis.

    • BaconSlayer

Yeah, the MSRP on the product page is $99.99, so that is a thing. It sound like there is a decent amount of plastic, but a BRICK of cardboard, but being FFG, that should not come as a surprise.

    • Ghool

$100 for a pre-painted minis game is pretty close to average these days.

Besides, you’re only paying full price if you buy from a small (or overpriced) LGS anyways. Chances are very high you’ll be able to get it for much less from an OLGS.

That said, I’ll be surprised if anyone has any stock left after the first week of release. So, chances are good we’ll see starter sets for double that on eBay.

Best to suck it up and pre-order I guess. 😛

      • PanzerKraken

Only 3 of the figures in the 100$ starter are painted though.

  • BaconSlayer

Or $99.95, I saved everyone four cents!

    You’re welcome.

  • Haibane

I know that this game will be focusing on the capital ships, but I do hope that the starfighters will have enough detail to their rules to allow for different types of squadrons and differences between what they can do (other than just X-wings & Tie Fighters).

    • surprize

Agreed. There are at least 3 broad classes of “fighter” (all-rounders, interceptors & heavy fighter/bomber) in the films and would be nice to at least see those represented as 3 general classes even if they don’t get into minutiae.

      • Well, they do talk about special squadrons that include certain star characters (such as Luke in charge of a flight of X-Wings), so it seems as though there will be delineation between different fighter sets.
