WOTC are re-releasing the 1st Edition Premium Players Handbook of Dungeons and Dragons in April.

From their announcement:

In 1974, the world changed forever when Gary Gygax introduced the Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game. The legacy of his innovative ideas and the extensive reach of his powerful influence can be seen in virtually every facet of gaming today.

To help honor his work and his memory, we created limited-edition reprints of the original 1st Edition core rulebooks: the Monster Manual, Player’s Handbook, and Dungeon Master’s Guide. These premium versions of the original AD&D rulebooks have been lovingly reprinted with the original art and content, but feature an attractive new cover design commemorating this re-release. Available in limited quantities as a hobby channel exclusive in North America.

Your purchase of this monumental book helps support the Gygax Memorial Fund —established to immortalize the “Father of Roleplaying Games” with a memorial statue in Lake Geneva, WI.

Hopefully limited release to stores only doesn’t mean that each store gets a copy … meaning if someone wants this they can expect to pay $100 bucks on ebay. Hopefully the print enough to get the people who want one a copy.

Unless this is a ploy to give shop owners a couple hundred bones via ebay sales to string them along until 5th ed comes out.

I applaud the reprint though I think a combined volume will be awesome and if I can buy one locally at the $35.00 price I will happily do so.

  • Description says AD&D, rather then ’74 1st Edition D&D… and its $35 for just the PG, $50 for the DMG, and $35 for the MM. :/

    • Is this Basic (ie. the one that originally came in the red box with light blue dice and white crayon) or what? The DnD boxed set I got back in the day had Elves and Dwarves as classes not races.. I’d love to get another copy of that..

1st edition AD&D hardcover reprints not the red book basic set.

    Any pictures of this yet?
I have a full set from white box basic on up to end of the 1st ed anyway, but it could be a nice add to the collection.

Wouldnt it be nice if Wizards actually used this as an opportunity to make a better D&D game as well?

You mean the computer-desktop hybrid disaster that is the current edition isn’t good? Wait – don’t tell me – I know the answer to this one!

I’m willing to put money on the fact that these sales will be tracked meticulously to if they should incorporate some of the old rule set into 5th ed…..

You guys know it is possible to donate money to this noble cause?!

I’m just surprised that no company has stepped forward to pay the bill. It would be a great PR-stunt in this nerdy community of ours.
