The Beasts of War website is reporting that Bastion, makers of Ex illis, are going out of business.

This does not appear to be 100% accurate reporting.

    • Zac

      I’ve emailed them for clarification

      • Toqtamish

They are not replying anything official yet.

They are not replying anything official yet.

The downside to that is that it generally means it is right – or mostly right.

If they weren’t going out of business they would want to get out ahead of things as fast as possible with a statement of some form to calm customers, distributors and store owners. If they don’t, well – it makes a lot of people really concerned about stock on shelves and in warehouses that costs more for a service that no longer exists.

Hope not. That company looked very interesting. I hope they continue. The fantasy aspect is not my cup of tea, but they have many inovating ideas.

  • BoosterX

They were at the Chaos Ludik event showcasing their game. Would be odd to make the effort for nothing.

Kenogui and I were at Chaos Ludik promoting the game, but we do not work for Bastion, we are regular gamers that wanted to promote a game they love.

There is an official post on their forum with the same message from Frierich, so it’s not a rumour.

Ex-Illis (presented by the publisher, Bastion)

Just going from the website as I didn’t speak to the people doing the demo while I was there, just assumed they were with Bastion as per Chaos Ludik page.

If true, this is a shame. Their product didn’t press my buttons, but it is a shame when an innovative idea bites the dust.

  • thats a shame, i was about to order the boxed set to give it a go

    • This is the problem I have with rumors. Folks who want to try don’t or folks that currently play stop purchasing. For a start up like bastion rumors such as these are damaging Ann’s quite possibly self fullfilling.

      • Zac

Bastion has had a while to post something about this. They could have posted something yesterday to deny it.

  • PanzerKraken

From the forum it sounds like other have gotten emails from the folks at Bastion confirming it, but it’s not final apparently as they are trying to find some way to keep it going with new buyers or such perhaps.

Is Ex Illis playable at all without their support?

    • Zac

Not really. The game is played on a server so unless the server is ready to process games there is no way to play

  • Osbad

“Rumours” on that thread indicate that the website hosting that enables the the game to be played is paid up front for a while yet, so won’t cease immediately even if Bastion fon’t get further financial backing. There is also talk of the fans taking the licence over with support from the folks who are currently staff to run as a fan-based non-commercial venture. Still all a ways off of course.

I think their business model was flawed to begin with. The miniatures are fantastic looking and the computer software is actually tolerable. The problem is they had no “rulebook” so unless players could find a computer, laptop or iphone/ipad they couldn’t play the game. Now most of us will say that is no problem. But if you are 14 years old you probably don’t have either of those readily available.

I wish they would have put out a rulebook and then supplemented it with the software. That would of been the best of both worlds.

As it is now I hope the wiki gets printed and we at least have that as a reference.

    • Toqtamish

A lot of 14 years old nowadays do have access to those at the least a PC. Its not like when I was a kid.

I have already collected and printed the wiki, but the software is all that is needed to play. Wiki just helps you understand it more.

That is a local assumption, same goes with wifi access to internet, its not that easily accessible worldwide as is in some countries.

  • Toqtamish

Buy the starter anyway, you can still play even if nothing new is coming out and with the soft faction system there is a lot of replay value.
