A Supernova is one of the biggest releases of energy in the entire universe. If a civilization had the right technology (and was brave enough), they could power their colonies for generations with the energy released. And trying to capture the energy from a dying start before it blows is just what you're up to in Supernova, a new board game up on Kickstarter now.
From the campaign:
Supernova is a unique strategy board game that employs the spiral geometry of the ancient game of Mehen (previously reconstructed by us) and pushes it to the limits in this game of orbital mayhem.
Supernova puts you in the pilot seats of four spaceships able to withstand the intense heat of a dying star. Your mission is to outmaneuver your opponents in an orbital free-for-all around the star, collecting its intense bursts of energy and sending them back to your imperiled colony before the whole shebang goes supernova! The gameboard utilizes a spiral geometry that continually pulls you into the star as you orbit it, forcing you to use your precious energy reserves to boost your orbit before burning up. Sounds easy? If you keep a safe distance, your opponents will snatch the invaluable energy bursts emitted by the star before they ever get to you. No, you will have to be bold, even if it means risking burning up or, more treacherously, a laser blast from your opponents that forces you into the star. In Supernova, the star is the source of all that is good, and the bringer of destruction. This is the spiral paradox you must navigate.
We’ve designed Supernova to be svelte, minimalist, and uncluttered. It packs a bold design into a relatively portable package. We want you to take it with you, show it off to your friends, and suck them into your deadly orbit.
The campaign's a bit more than halfway to its goal with 23 days left to go.
