Gunship Sci-Fi RPG Up On Kickstarter

Many of us are stuck at home right now. So, at-best, we can play our RPGs with friends over virutal tabletops. Most games aren't designed for this. Gunship is. It's a new sci-fi RPG that's up on Kickstarter now. It's got a space-Western feel to it. So, saddle up your starship and head into the farthest reaches of space.

Gunship is optimized for use with a virtual tabletop (such as Roll20 or MapTool); the game's complete rules are freely available in both web & pdf form on gunshipsrd.com. Alternatively, you can download the Core Rulebook directly from here. These rules aim to be concise. (The Gunship reference document is 50-pages long.) All in all, the game is supremely accessible to both new and returning players.

The bedrock of Gunship is its expansive and easy-to-use d20-based skill system. There are 17 "hard" skills and 8 knowledge skills in the game and that ratio has performed very well during testing. The skills are unique enough that characters will feel rewarded for specializing, but broad enough to keep the overall number of skills low. Skills can enhance a character's power in combat or allow players to circumvent some conflicts entirely. The skill system is further refined through qualities which are special non-combat abilities that characters gain as they level up.

Combat in this game is fast-paced and punchy. Nearly every gamemaster knows the pain of players who become distracted as soon as Initiative has been rolled and Gunship's design helps to minimize that outcome. First and foremost, crunch in the game is limited to a manageable level and new-player-friendliness is the game's first priority. Second, there are three different ways for a player to perform an action during another character's turn (Swift Attacks, Entering Watch, and Acting Reactively) and these mechanics incentivise players to pay close attention and watch for opportunities to sneak in extra actions. Additionally, the combat system as a whole aims to elicit an emotional response from players by immersing them in the chaos and danger of firearm combat.
