Greater Than Games' Sentinels of the Multiverse was a fan-beloved game for quite some time. It came to an end a couple years ago and I know several people who were saddened by its passing. But, just like any good comic book hero, they're never gone forever. Greater Than Games has announced Sentinels of the Multiverse is coming back with their Definitive Edition.
From the announcement:
Hey, everyone. Christopher Badell here. This is a major announcement, so I figured it should come from me.
Who am I? If you don’t know, that’s fine — our COO Jennifer Closson is running a series of Who’s Who articles over the next few months on the (very new and very improved) Greater Than Games homepage, so there will eventually be a long form introduction for me there. Until then, the relevant part of my job is that I’m the co-creator of the world of Sentinels Comics along with artist Adam Rebottaro, I’m the lead writer and editor of everything Sentinel Comics, and I’m the lead designer and developer of the game Sentinels of the Multiverse.
So, enough about me. Let’s talk Sentinels of the Multiverse.
In 2010, Adam and I had an idea for a game — the game that we always wanted to play. A cooperative card game about comic books; about costumed heroes with powers and abilities working together against far greater threats than any of the heroes could handle on their own, but by working together, they could overcome. A game based in a vibrant world that represented many decades of comic book history, full of rich and dynamic environments that themselves played a part in the gameplay. This game was Sentinels of the Multiverse. We had a very ambitious idea of what this game could be, but part of that ambition did not involve what sort of product the game might be. Even when we teamed up with my friend Paul Bender — who is now the CEO of Greater Than Games — to create a company and publish this game, none of us really knew just how big this game could grow, or what this game could end up meaning to so many people.
Now, on the tenth anniversary of the founding of Greater Than Games, we have a bit better of an idea. The Sentinels of the Multiverse core game and many expansions have sold hundreds of thousands of copies around the world, won numerous awards, and inspired countless fan art, fanfiction, and scores of cosplayers. The world of Sentinel Comics has taken many forms, including a variety of board games, a hit podcast, and a recently released roleplaying game. But, even still, the most popular thing to come out of Sentinel Comics is the first thing: the Sentinels of the Multiverse card game.
We created Sentinels of the Multiverse over ten years ago, and we have learned a LOT since then. I’m a better writer and designer than I was then, Adam is a far better artist, and Greater Than Games is significantly better at making quality products. We have a bigger and better team than ever before. The original version of Sentinels was entirely made by me and Adam just at the start of our careers working in games, and it shows. And yet, it’s still one of our top selling games. It deserves another look — a new, more polished, more definitive edition.
