Way back in the day, I used to play roller hockey (goalie, specifically). I loved it and I particularly loved skating. Though, even as much as I got roughed around out on the rink (yes, even goalies can get roughed up), it never seemed to come close to what Roller Derby people get up to out there. Well, my skating days might be behind me, but I can still get out there vicariously through Derby Drama, a new roller derby RPG that's up on Kickstarter now.
From the campaign:
Derby Drama is a tabletop role-playing game about skating in a roller derby bout! In each one-shot game, players split up into two teams of competing skaters. Explore relationships with teammates and rivals, choose smart strategies, and play your most skillful moves to help your team win.
I designed Derby Drama because I used to play roller derby, and I really miss it! This sport literally changed my life. But playing roller derby is also expensive, a huge time commitment, and physically dangerous. It's not accessible to me right now. So I wondered, what if I could evoke the feeling of roller derby... just by playing a tabletop game with friends?
Since then I've playtested Derby Drama with dozens of folks at meet-ups, PAX Unplugged, and Metatopia, improving the rules with the feedback these lovely generous players have given. I've even played the game with my old teammates from Ohio Valley Roller Girls. Now I can't wait to share it with you!!
The campaign's coming up to 5x funded with 9 days left to go.
