Tale of Painters saw that there were all those new GW paints out there and decided to review them, so we can all be informed consumers when it comes time for us to decide if we wanna buy into the system or not. Wasn’t that nice of them?

From the update:

We at Tale of Painters worked hard to present you the ultimate review and guide to the new Citadel paint range. We obtained a vast array of colours to examine carefully all of the six new types of paint – bases, layers, shades, glazes, dry compounds and textures. We painted up a lot of test models to not only test the qualities of the new paint range, but also to compare them to the old Citadel Colours and to check their compatibility. We’ll also cast our eyes on the offerings of other popular miniature paint brands and see how the new range competes. Let’s see how revolutionary the new range really is.

I found the Glaze, Dry Compound and Texture sections helpful although overall the article does not qualify as “the ultimate review and guide”.

The first gripe about ‘confusing’ paint names is a bit precious and the decree of Badab Black to be superior to Nuln Oil is a reflection of the writer’s personal preference – but the Imperial Fist backpack painting example is very good.

An excellent and fair review overall.

I am not a fan of GW these days, but I get what they are trying to do with their paints.

I do think they would have been better served though to pass on the textured paints and instead use those tones to broaden their colour palette.

  • Really helpful review and I liked the background stuff of who supplies the GW paints.

Really good review, bit of a shame that the new washes and foundations aren’t as good as the old ones. 🙁

We’ll see. For the more casual painter the demo I did at the local GW store sold me on a few of the new line. I was looking for a decent foundation (base) brown and they make one now. Going to give them a whirl over the next couple weeks and see what works and what doesn’t. Grabbed the yellow wash, brown and tan foundations and the replacement Iyanden Darksun (which I use as my Bad Moons yellow base color) for comparisons.
