The World of Smog

The time has come. The end is nigh! Time is running short! The end of the Kickstarter campaign for The World of SMOG: Rise of Moloch is upon us! Or, it will be in the next 24 hours (from time of posting, anyway). As is usual for a CMON Kickstarter campaign, they're way over their funding goal and have unlocked a lot of special content, much of it Kickstarter exclusive. If you don't want to miss out in this new game in the world of SMOG, you'd better get your pledge in.
The streets of London are choked with thick fog and smoke from the factories. People go about their everyday lives. The undead are used as a labor force, putting many out of a job. Strange creatures, tainted by the runoff from the factories, lurk the alleyways. In all of it, the Cult looks to bring back Moloch, a fire demon from centuries ago. It's up to the Gentlemen of the Unicorn Club to put a stop to it and save the Queen, London, and the whole world. That's just where you come in. The World of Smog: Rise of Moloch is CMON's latest Kickstarter campaign that's just launched.
The Rise of Moloch Kickstarter will be getting underway here in just under two weeks. I'm a firm believer in being an informed customer. So reading up on a game and seeing all you can about how it will work is important to me. It's also important to CMON, as they have a pair of articles up about gameplay in Rise of Moloch for you to check out.
CMON is known for their miniatures in their games. I mean, the M stands for "Mini." In The World of Smog: Rise of Moloch, the game will come with plenty of miniatures. But how do you know they're going to be the C (that is to say, "Cool")? Well, you get a preview of them here.
With industry comes pollution. There's always byproducts created when you burn something, and the furnaces and power plants in the industrial sections of London were notorious for burning whatever they could find to run their machines. This also created horrible liquid runoff from the various boilers. Those forced to live next to the factories would eventually experience degenerative diseases and birth defects. When protests broke out, the police forces fought back, forcing the groups underground. These desperate individuals despise those that live above them and will routinely take on raids of the upper surface. Some of the characters in this Grotesque Company Circus can be called on by the Nemesis player in The World of Smog: Rise of Moloch. We get a look at them in this preview.
In The World of Smog: Rise of Moloch, the Gentlemen of the Unicorn Club are fighting against the nefarious Cult. Members of that shadowy organization are looking to overthrow the British government and bring about the return of the ancient god, Moloch, to the world. That must be stopped at all costs if order and nature are to rule the day. One of the Cult's most powerful tools is the actual Spawn of Moloch, of which we get a preview here.
In the world of Smog, zombies have become a regular part of life. They're not the rampaging hordes you usually see in horror movies (well, most of the time they're not, but we'll get to that). Instead, they're a cheap and readily-available labor source. The factories around London aren't going to run themselves (no matter what the technomancers are working on). But while researching the old deities, an even more-ancient (and quite a bit more malevolent) one was found: Moloch. And it's the cult that's trying to bring Moloch back that's the main antagonists of The World of Smog: Rise of Moloch.
In a steampunk Victorian England, dark forces are at work. The crown is not safe, as an evil cult looks to bring the nefarious Moloch into the world. The only thing standing against these dark forces are the gentlemen of the Unicorn Club. But who will eventually control the dark, rainy, smog-filled streets of London? That's up to you to decide in The World of Smog: Rise of Moloch, a new board game coming from CMON and launching on Kickstarter next month.
Well, the Kickstarter for Massive Darkness ended last night. And as has become tradition, with the end of one campaign, the announcement of the next has been made. This time around, things are getting steamy, as CMON and Guillotine Games once again head to the world of Smog. This time it's with Rise of Moloch.
