As Catalyst Game Labs stepped into the Convention Center this year to start early set-up, we discussed how our yearly circadian cycles literally seem wedded to Gen Con…we could feel the click of the cycle as another Gen Con began and we marked off the beginning of another year…
As usual, there’s so much fun coolness to share, it’s gonna be a long post…
Experimental Technical Readout: The Clans samples a number of new designs being produced by the various Clan powers who now call the Inner Sphere home. Infusing a new wave of advanced Clan technology into the older models at their disposal, most of the designs featured in this book incorporate a mix of modern technologies and design standards the likes of which the Inner Sphere has yet to face in open battle. Statistics and Record Sheets are included for 13 new experimental BattleMechs, ProtoMechs, vehicles, aerospace fighters, and battle armor are presented in this book, ready for play in advanced BattleTech games.
Field Report: Periphery describes the state of the various Periphery states in the wake of the events described in Jihad Hot Spots: Terra, including the overall military and logistical condition of the minor powers that exist on the fringes of the war-ravaged Inner Sphere. Whether plagued by piracy, ravaged by Word of Blake terror cells, or simply struggling to maintain their independence in a time of chaos, the various realms of the Periphery now struggle to rebuild as a new era beckons…
The Jihad is over. A new Republic has been born. In the wake of one of humanity’s greatest conflicts, the Inner Sphere, Periphery and Clans must adapt to new political and industrial realities—a new balance of power. But changes on the map are only the beginning. The Word of Blake’s war has scattered a new wave of technological progress across nearly every realm, giving rise to a new generation of combat units. Only the sheer devastation of the relentless fighting has slowed the arms race that is sure to come… but for how long?
Technical Readout: Prototypes introduces the wave of new battle armor, vehicle, ’Mech, and aerospace units that debuted in the years after the birth of the Republic of the Sphere. Featuring technologies rarely seen outside the testing fields or Solaris arenas, these new war machines provide a peek at the new age to come as mankind faces a new century.
For use with BattleTech, Total Warfare, Tactical Operations, and Strategic Operations.
It’s been a long, long haul, crewmen. But the sea trials are over and celebrations are being organized (wonder if we can get a miniature bottle of champaign somewhere?)…literally right now I’m signing off of final proofs of various material and it’s all being uploaded to the printer (80% percent is already up and the rest will be signed off on and uploaded by end of the day).
In 2570, the six Great Houses of the Inner Sphere united to create the Star League, promising to bring an end to the generations of warfare that engulfed the worlds mankind now called home. Shortly thereafter, to seal their alliance, they turned against the various independent realms of the Periphery. Over the next twenty years, the so-called Reunification War would rage, claiming more lives than the savagery of the Age of War before it, all to realize House Cameron’s dream of a united humanity—at any cost.
Historical: Reunification War describes the first grand military campaign of the newborn Star League against the collected realms of the Periphery. Covering each of the four major campaign theaters in detail, this book provides a hard look at the formative years of the first Star League, and the fateful decisions that led them to usher in a new Golden Age for mankind by unleashing their armies against its most far-flung worlds.
Era Digest: Age of War is now available for sale. We also released two novels as epub/mobi files – Assumption of Risk and Binding Force. You can grab those at the BattleShop, DTRPG or the Kindle store (when it updates, the Kindle store can be up to a week to propagate through Amazon’s system.)
Welcome to the BattleTech Master Unit List: Battle Values (version 1.0.1). Since even before Total Warfare was first published, it has been our goal to provide BattleTech fans with a comprehensive list of game units and their corresponding Battle Value.
This product is the first Battle Value list for units using the Total Warfare rules set. It offers over 3,500 variants for well over 900 individual combat vehicles. BMBV 1.0.1 focuses on ground combat and lists all ’Mechs (BattleMechs, OmniMechs, and IndustrialMechs), aerospace units (aerospace fighters, conventional fighters, small craft, and DropShips), Combat and Support Vehicles (including tracked, wheeled, hover, VTOL, and WiGE vehicle types), Infantry (conventional and battle armored), and ProtoMechs that have a published Battle Value. This also means that you can purchase a record sheet for every unit in the BMBV, via a Catalyst Game Labs published BattleTech product.
We have also provided faction availability for the Jihad era and Early Dark Age (Republic) era. This release of the product only list Dark Age availability for units that were introduced or updated in Technical Readout: 3085 and Technical Readout: 3085 Supplemental.
Future releases on this free version of the BMBV (numbered by revision) will be updated with new information as well as units from upcoming product releases. Also planned for upcoming releases include complete Dark Age faction availability and faction information for the Homeworld Clans. This release is focused on the Jihad and Early Dark age era and does not cover Homeworld Clans.
Battletech! A true classic that is near and dear to many gamer’s hearts. In episode 80 Raef, Russ, and Craig chat with Randall Bills, the man with more years on the Battletech project than he cares to admit. Today Randall works for Catalyst Game Labs and he brings us up to speed on Battletech, Shadowrun, and Catalyst’s new game universe, Leviathans.
After that, it’s time to have fun storming the castle. Stronghold blends euro mechanics with a war game theme: siege the castle! Does this game appeal to all three hosts?
As usual, I received the box this morning and as quickly as I could un-pack it, sort it appropriately, take photos and transfer them to the computer for a blog post, I’m getting a photo up.
Below are test shots, still on the sprue, for the 6 miniatures that will be found in the Core Box Set. As soon as I’m done with this post I’ll be building one of each to verify any last details that may need to change and then I’m signing off on them so they’re ready to begin full production
For three hundred years, the nations of the Inner Sphere waged war in the name of the fallen Star League, sending armies of MechWarriors into battle for glory and power. The arrival of the Clans, martial descendants of the lost Star League Defense Force, in 3049 upset all the previous balances of power and set the stage for cataclysmic warfare to rival the worst of the Succession Wars. The end of the initial Clan invasion and the new renaissance of military technologies leads the leaders of the Successor States to seek advantage against each other. The ever-present specter of the Clans urges desperation to end old feuds to make space for new ones. And the Truce of Tukayyid holds the Clans in check, but does nothing to ease the cultural pressures on both sides of the border.
Era Report: 3062 describes the state of the Inner Sphere and the Clans at a divisive period in BattleTech history: the latter years of the Clan Invasion. Presented as a general overview of the period, rather than a focused report on a single conflict, this book includes descriptions of many major Inner Sphere, Periphery, and Clan factions. Notable personalities, military forces, and an overview of the technological capabilities of the Inner Sphere and Clan powers of this critical period in history are also provided, along with special advanced-level rules for campaigns set in this era, whether played using the Total Warfare core rules or those found in A Time of War: The BattleTech RPG.
As I mentioned in the blog post concerning moving the submission deadline on the Win A Free Miniature Contest, more and more people are aware of Leviathans, coming to the site, and so on. As we start hitting more critical mass and as more main stream steampunk and gaming sites pick up the excitement, I felt it was time to not only generate an updated Lieutenant’s Manual quick-start rules (it’s been 18 months since it was released, after all), but time to release it for free so the PDF can migrate as far and as wide as the aether winds will carry it.
With that in mind, there’s now a new Downloads page on the site that includes 3 free PDFs that’ll have people into the universe and game in no time.
Catalyst Game Labs has spent the last four years re-launching the BattleTech brand, with a slew of sourcebooks and an award-winning line of core rulebooks. The awareness of BattleTech is at a height not seen since the mid 90s, while the number of people returning or finding BattleTech for the first time continues to climb.
In anticipation of the return of the Introductory Box Set to print we increased our standard print run by more than 50%, confident the years of work and the continuing strength of the community would require a larger print run. Even our wildest expectations, however, could not match the demand. Barring copies set aside for Origins and Gen Con, we effectively sold out of the print run from the warehouse in 10 days.
We are extremely excited and humbled to be at the helm of BattleTech as it returns to such heights; a worthy legacy for such a seminal game.
A new print run is already under way (you can see a photo of the plotter proofs from the printer below), and we’ve more than doubled our standard print run to try and keep up with demand. Just as exciting, we’re coordinating with multiple foreign licensees to produce parts of the box set simultaneously as translations of the Introductory Box Set enters foreign markets for the first time in nearly a decade.
The reprint should be available on store shelves by the end of third quarter this year.
Since the coming of the Clans, the military, industrial, and command complexes of the Inner Sphere have raced against the invaders—and each other—to out-produce one another in battle-worthy manpower and materiel. Factories that were smashed in the Succession Wars were reborn and revitalized, churning out ever more cutting-edge equipment, while academies expanded their curriculums and sent generations of fresh warriors into battle.
At the pinnacle of the arms race, new wars erupted, first against the Clans, and then between the Great Houses and Periphery states of the Inner Sphere. In the fires of the Word of Blake Jihad, destruction reached a level not seen since the early Succession Wars…but the stricken realms persevered.
Objectives: Capellan Confederation describes the state of the major factories, training centers, and command centers of House Liao’s Capellan Confederation in the wake of the events described in Jihad Hot Spots: Terra. Including detailed stats on every key system within the realm, this supplement also includes basic rules to help guide players in developing BattleTech scenarios focused on defending—or attacking—these critical sites.
HexPack: Cities and Roads (along with the DropShip promotional tile) is currently on a ship nearing the US, meaning a Street Date announcement isn’t too far away. In the meantime several copies fell onto my desk.
The promotional tile is shrink-wrapped with an ad/rules sheet, so the first photo shows two promotional tiles. The rest of the photos show an “unpacking” of the HexPack, and some random placement of hextiles onto the map, including the last two photos that show the cool promotional DropShip side up and the destroyed “Ultra Rubble” reverse side up.
Catalyst Game Labs and Black Book Editions are pleased to announce the coming publication of BattleTech for the French market. Black Book Editions bought the license for BattleTech several years ago, knowing it would be a great game, but they were waiting for a good occasion to launch it in France. What could be a better occasion than the 25th Anniversary Introductory Box Set. Black Book Editions will also work on publishing novels and other rulebooks for a full supporting line for BattleTech.
“I’m very excited about this development,” states Randall N. Bills, Managing Developer for Catalyst Game Labs. “Not only has the French community been waiting for this for long years, but foreign licensee interest is directly related to how successful a game line is doing in its original language. We’ve spent a lot of time the last four years re-invigorating BattleTech and to see such direct results is fantastic. Just great for BattleTech as a whole.”
Across its lifetime BattleTech has been translated into over a dozen languages, including a French edition well over a decade ago. The publication and subsequent reception of the 25th Anniversary Introductory Box Set has sparked renewed interest for foreign editions of this perennial game.
“We’re proud of the enthusiasm generated by Shadowrun and more than pleased with the 4 years of collaboration with Catalyst Game Labs,” said David Burckle of Black Book Editions. “We’re really looking forward to starting a new experience with BattleTech. And I can bet the French public is already waiting for its translation. Hoping that we will, once more, do justice to the quality of BattleTech products, I thank Catalyst Game Labs for entrusting us with this project, in the name of the whole team of Black Book Editions.
A small handful of tabletop games have been played and supported over a period of time spanning four decades (‘80s,’ 90s, ‘00s, and ‘10s), with the Battletech franchise being arguably one of the more popular of these games. Catalyst Game Labs has chosen to release a special Battletech introductory boxed set to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the game’s release. The set retails for $49.99 (USD).
You’ve defeated your opponent across all the terrain that the BattleTech Introductory Box Set has to offer and now you want more worlds to conquer. Grab your dice and start rolling, because this product is for you.
HexPack: Cities and Roads is a flexible map system aid for the BattleTech game system. Designed for use in conjunction with other pre-printed mapsheets (such as those from the Introductory Box Set), the system’s flexibility allows for easy modifications to existing mapsheets, increasing the enjoyment of a given scenario as players quickly change the terrain to bring new excitement to each game they play. A booklet contains two ready-to-play scenarios, which include expanded play options such as clearing woods, buildings and additional weather conditions.
BattleTech Starter: Fist and Falcon brings players a new and exciting way to jump into the BattleTech universe. As conflict erupts anew on the Lyran-Falcon border during the early years of the Jihad, two untested commands clash. Including the brief history and personal dossiers of the members of these two forces, this PDF provides scenarios and special rules compatible with BattleTech games using Total Warfare and A Time of War, complete with record sheets for their ’Mechs and characters alike.
From the start Leviathans has been about embracing the community as much as possible. The game is releasing under a Creative Commons license, I’ve been blogging for two years now sharing almost every aspect of development (from the game, to the setting, to the art), we’ve tapped the community for several open playtests, and so on.
We’d like to tap that community again as we start heading towards a release in a few months, and reward them for their support of what we hope will be the coolest steampunk game around.
However, this isn’t a contest about Catalyst…this is a contest by the community, for the community. Here’s the details…
