Combat Patrol Sally 4th

Do you have what it takes to be part of a combat patrol during WWII? Making your way along some seemingly quiet road in, say Europe, just checking out the scenery, making sure no Nazis are laying in wait. Of course, being a skirmish game we’re talking about here, “there’s not actually enemies around and we’re just going for a nice walk” isn’t much of a scenario. There’s going to be enemies, and now you can play out these encounters with Combat Patrol, a WWII skirmish game that Sally 4th will be publishing for UK/European audiences.

Combat Patrol Sally 4th

If you’re one of those gamers who the dice gods hate, this is a system you might want to check out. Combat Patrol uses the G.A.M.E.R. game engine. It’s completely diceless! So if you’re sick of rolling 1s for all your saves, this is your game.

The system also isn’t set to any specific scale, and doesn’t have any specific miniatures for it. So you can feel free to use whatever WWII figures you have laying around, from Bolt Action to Flames of War.

I was born at a very young age. I plan on living forever. So far, so good.

I’d be interested in their system, except for the fact both their website and rules appear to use completely unreadable fonts. The rules are actively painful to read because of the ‘typewriter’ font used through out.

      Hi DeathBy, thanks for comment.
Sally 4th website uses a standard Comic Sans font so is very easy to read. Here’s the link: http://wargamesbuildings.co.uk/epages/950003459.sf/en_GB/?ObjectPath=/Shops/950003459/Categories/Combat_Patrol

The ‘Typewriter Font’ is part of a graphic image supplied by author so can not change that. I have let him now about the issue with his font. When we get to print the hard-copy version it will hopefully use a modern readable font. No problem with the cards, they are crystal clear and I’m in my 50’s and use reading glasses!

ComicSans: when Papyrus is too classy…

        • Chris Abbey

I like Papyrus to, we use it on all our magazine adverts.

“Ground scale is 1 inch = 5 yards, pretty close to the scale of the 28mm figures I used in play testing”

So, um, 1/180 ground scale is pretty close to a 1/64 miniature. Yeah, I guesso…. if you suck at math. 1″ = 5 feet would be closer.

The font is indeed horrid. At first I’m like “Courier New is fine, wtf are you talking about?!?!” but it is hard to read and just reeks of “Ooooo, neato, I just found out how to change a font!”. Hopefully it gets changed.

I hadn’t realized that rules were targeted to specific cultures/nations, these days.

    • Chris Abbey

Sorry, bit slow on the uptake, so don’t understand your comment.

Ah… I get your reference, it is because we said we are publishing for European audience? That is why we are publishing in Europe because the postage and import tax is so high bringing it into the EU. It is also available straight from US printers and we are of course more than happy to ship to anywhere in the world. Where do you live n815e?

      • n815e

Yes, it seemed odd to read “Sally 4th to Publish Combat Patrol WWII Skirmish game for UK / European Market”. The wording makes it seem like a game targeted for Europeans, which made me wonder what that could possibly mean.
Who is producing it in the US?

        • Chris Abbey

Drive Thru Cards is publishing in US, as I said we are happy to supply to customers anywhere and are doing the four card decks in a nice tin presentation box.

Are these rules only available as a download or are they available as a printed book?

    • Chris Abbey

Hi Alex, good question. Up until now it has been download only. Sally 4th have a hard copy of the book going through publication – print process which should be available very shortly.

  • Chris Abbey

Some very interesting comments about fonts etc. Has anyone else played the rules? Lets have a chat about the streamlined and innovative mechanics or the authors support for the rules with video tutorials and a yahoo group for getting answers straight from the author. Has anyone seen the videos yet? What do you reckon?

I like Yahoo Groups, but a lot of folk don’t since they changed them. They’re easy to load up files and posts come straight to your inbox. What about a Facebook group?

      • Chris Abbey

I’ll ask the author. Sounds like a good idea once we’ve built up a bit of a customer base.

  • Alex Elstone

Good news, Chris. I like using PDFs for quick reference, but prefer a proper book to read. Tactile and well, it just feels right. Will be watching for a hard copy version. Thanks!

    • Chris Abbey

No problem, we should have them by end of next week and will have plenty of cards and rulebooks with us at Hammerhead and Salute. We are also booked in for running a participation game at Partizan.
