Paulson Games posted up some new concept art for a new style of mech they’re thinking of working on and they’re looking for your feedback.

From the preview:

A concept I was toying around with. Has inspiration elements from Shoji Kawamori’s art (macross/gundam) and XCom’s Mectoid. If I make a model for it’d be sized around 55-60mm so it’d be roughly on par with Infinity TAG suits. Working name for these would be R.O.I. Remote Operated Infantry “Roys” for slang.

Still on the fence with the design so I thought I’d toss it out there and see what you guys think.

Are we meant to leave feedback here?

    If so..

The shank of the leg needs to be longer. When it’s equal in size to the upper leg it ends up looking stubby. Abdomen needs to be slightly longer which will result in slightly longer arms as well. Center the elbow on the arms. Bicep/Forearm connection looks like balloons and should probably have a more “interlocking” feeling like a universal joint or hinge. Shoulders (particularly trapezius) should extend a bit further pushing the deltoids away from the body. This will give a more heroic feel to the model and open up the shoulder space for those of us who would want to do conversions in that area for various reasons. The silhouette of the head feels to “mushed” and could stand to be more distinct.

Hope that was helpful, I’m available for concept art at a reasonable rate if you need to see what I’m talking about (or just want some illustrations done).

  • I think it looks way too much like a Tau suit.

    Still neat though.

Similar sure, but Tau armor is an anime movie trope. With the exception of the “dog-leg” you could say that it is extremely similar to Briareos from Appleseed, a Hardsuit from Bubblegum Crisis, a Zaku from Gundam, a Cataphract or Caesar from Mechwarrior (he did say the scale would be something other than 28mm), or as he mentioned, X-com’s Sectoid.

Truth be told, I had contacted him about weapons for a Mechwarrior inspired Riptide conversion I am working on and he was pretty convinced that the GW stuff wasn’t Tau enough for such a build.. I’m going to go out on a limb and guess that inspired him to do this (again, it’s going to be bigger than 28mm). My conversion uses Riptide legs, a Stormtalon cockpit, Devilfish engines, etc etc.. His thought was that the imperial parts on the Stormtalon wouldn’t look right.

TL:DR and my point.. It might look “Tau” (it’s supposed to) but “Tau” is really just anime.. AND.. this is not a Crisis or Stealth suit stand in.. it’s presumably a Riptide stand-in.

      • It wouldn’t be anywhere near as large as a riptide, the thought was doing a model that’d be in the 60mm range. It’d be roughly twice man size, akin to Appleseed Landmates or Infinity’s TAG suits.

When I first read it, I thought you meant a suit like that but scaled to 60mm (ie huge) not a model that was 60mm from base to “eye” and still in 28mm scale. It was entirely my mistake 🙂

      • do you have any sort of gallery link?

        • 4tonmantis

          My Gallery

There’s contact info in there and I have more.. that’s intended to be a “sampler platter” so I kept it to a few entries per category..

    More likely calm-suit sized (that’s a not-crisis, right?)

Didn’t see the bit about the TAG suit.. huh.. yeah definitely not-crisis..

  • I’d posted it on FB just to get some general feedback, It’s a very quick concept sketch that will need further development. Hadn’t realized it’d be considered a newsworthy item. Lol.

    I appreciate the feedback.

Much of the idea stemmed from playing Xcom’s Enemy Within and I’ve always had a lot of love for the Landmates in the Appleseed series. It’s always awesome to see a 10-12ft tall mecha suit charging out of a dropship.

      I love me some XCom!
I just picked up PS+ for a year and they had that as a free game.. sooo good..
I keep hoping someone will do a lander kit similar to the Sky Ranger and there’s so much other stuff in that series that I’d love to see in miniature format.
