HoA_cover.jpgRattrap Productions have announced the re-release of the In the Heart of Africa rules and army lists.

    From their announcement:
I have just received in copies from our printer of In the Heart of Africa and the In the Heart of Africa Army Lists books. These books, written by Chris Peers, have had their files cleaned up and a Table of Contents added (to make finding the rules and armies you need easier). They are also now perfect bound with a laminated cover.

The big news for this release, though, is that we have been able to get them printed more economically here in the U.S. and have been able to drop the price. In the Heart of Africa is now just $20 and the Army list book is just $18.

You can order the books from our store or from Brigade Games. Copies of this book will also be on their way to Northstar within a week.

In The Heart Of Africa is a set of fast-play wargames rules for the period of exploration and imperial conquest in tropical Africa. Chronologically this corresponds roughly to the second half of the 19th century, while geographically it covers the region between the Zambezi River in the south, and the edge of the Sahara Desert in the north – the classic “Darkest Africa” of the explorers.

As a bit of a sneak peek at the entire list (which will be posted in the next few days as a year-end retrospective) I’ve created a summary of the companies that have had nominations as well as the number of nominated products they have in this year’s “short” list. Altar Modelling have released a 25mm figure of the Great Conqueror Timur.

    timur1.jpg

    From their announcement:

Altar releases the 25mm resin figure of the Great Conqeuror Timur. His name literally meant “Iron” in eastern Chatagai Turkish language. Unfortunately, he is improperly known as ‘Tamerlane’ in the world.

Timur, one of the greatest soldiers and statesmen in Turkish and world history was born in 1336 in Hoca Ilgar village near Sehr-i Sebz at Samarkand, Uzbekistan. He managed to unite the disperse Turkish and Mongol tribes in the region and with his superior military talents he achieved major conquests. Timur took a wide geography under his control. Except for China, he conquered entire Asia. From deep into Russia to Mongolia, from India, Caucasus to Iraq, Syria and Anatolia, he dominated all powers in these areas. In 1402, he even managed to defeat mighty Ottomans which was under another great Turkish soldier and statesman, Sultan Bayezid in Ankara. Timur managed to establish a strong army and strong state without getting help from anyone or without inheritance. Resin figure comes with original box and documents.

Studio McVey have released their latest miniature, Lt. Kara Black.

    From their announcement:

I’ve just added the latest miniature in our Limited Edition resin series to the Studio Store over on the main website. The latest miniature is our first non-fantasy release – we’re delighted with how she came out, and it’s a subject we certainly plan to explore further in future releases. The concept was by Sam Wood, and Kev White sculpted her in stunning detail.

I particularly like the pose of this piece – depicting her in the midst of a fierce fight with an unknown assailant – the recoil from her gun kicking her backwards. Kara is scarred and bleeding, but undaunted. She comes complete with a scenic base insert showing some great details – like her discarded helmet and a slime covered skull.

Grindhouse Games have posted details of a Secrets of the Third Reich painting contest.

    From their website:

By February 15, 2010, post pictures of your entries in this thread on the forums. You may enter any infantry unit of 5 or more models that is legal in either SoTR, Incursion (at least 5 models from one side or the other), or the Berlin or Bust beta OoB. Dioramas are cool. All entries, to be elegible to win, must contain at least some West Wind or Grindhouse elements on every model. This could be just heads for example.

Winners will be chosen by the community on the forums as is our tradition. You must sign your name to your vote. You may not vote for yourself when voting time comes around. Note that since the judging is by the community, technical painting is not necessarily king. You just have to put up pictures of models that all your peers want to take home

Back 2 Base-ix have released a new series of acrylic flight stands.

    small.jpg

    From their announcement:

Tired of having your flight stands snap from your flyer/skimmer models? Or do you leave your stands unglued so they can be packed separately for transport, only to then have your models tip and spin during game play when sitting on the peg? Well look no further, with Magnetic Flight Stands you get the best of both worlds. Models are held firmly in place during gameplay, but can be separated from their stands for transport.

Using a combination laser cut acrylic and rare earth magnets (N50), and tested on a wide range of small, medium and large flyer and skimmer kits for 25mm to 30mm gaming, following the on site simple steps for assembly will see to it that you never have to use another type of flight stand again.

    • 4 Small Stands (2 heights) $10.95AU
    • 4 Large Stands (2 heights) $12.95AU

Mercs Miniatures have posted the concept art for the USCR Assault Trooper miniature.

    From their website:

USCR will wield extremely powerful and bulky armor. They are an intimidating force on the battlefield, fully embracing their raw power as a major part of their tactics (Brian will fill you in more on this – if you ask him nicely). Their armor is so demanding of resources, that each suit requires a great deal of power. As a result of all this power use, the suit also generates a ton of heat, so it’s covered in cooling fans/jets and heat sinks to maintain a stable operating temperature. However, all this armor comes at a price, which is much more restricted movement.

Pulp Monsters have posted the concept art for their upcoming Vector miniature for the Pulp City superhero skirmish game.

    From their website:

Vector, more of a data bit than a human, is able to replicate only one emotion: crazy love for Kitty. He used to be human, one of New Port’s many lowlives until the job, that changed his life.
A mysterious contractor paid him for stealing a bit of the C.O.R.E.’s code. Even though he succeeded against all odds, Heavy Metal leader’s programming was so powerful that it morphed the thug into what is now know as Vector.

Fantasy Flight Games have posted an update on the status of their efforts to redesign the Tannhauser game.

    From their website:

December is upon us, and as the temperatures begin to drop, things are really starting to heat up once again in the Tannhäuser world. We are almost finished pouring over the assets we received from Take On You, and are incorporating and coordinating them into upcoming releases.

The next release will be the updated rules. They are currently going through playtesting, as each token has been given new properties and each scenario is being updated accordingly. Keep in mind that while we are overhauling the rules, your Tannhäuser components will still be compatible. All of the tokens, maps, character cards, and other items in your copy of Tannhäuser will still be used, albeit in new and exciting ways.

Initial voting for the Lead Adventure forum Build Something Contest is now open.

    From their announcement:

The first LAF ‘Build Something Contest’ has now started the initial round of voting. The idea behind the contest is to build something that you have just never got around to doing.

The theme was ‘Transportation’, deliberately kept very open so as to encourage as many entries as possible. Contestants had 8 weeks to put their entry together. Everyone was encouraged to show the progress of their project in a WIP thread so that everyone can see how they did it, providing useful tips and tricks for everyone.

The entries have been split into four groups for the first round of voting, ending at 1159 hours GMT on 13 December:

The top two entries from each group will go into the final, which will follow immediately after. Final voting will last one week.

There a wide range of subjects entered in the contest, including boats, tanks, aircraft and buildings. Go and vote now and maybe take part in future contests.

Scale Creep Miniatures is reporting on efforts to revive the Flagship Games line.

    From their announcement:

We are very excited to announce that Flagship Games is not dead. With a little voo-doo help from the chief headshrinkers here at Scale Creep Miniatures, they are back. All of their rulebooks and miniatures will be available again right here. Rather than see this excellent stable of gaming products disappear, we have acquired the rights to them and will be taking over producing and retailing them here in the US. We hope to be able to announce a UK distributor for the rule books (and perhaps the ships) soon as well.

Please stay tuned for more details.
