Ninja Division Launches Relic Knights 2 Kickstarter

Ninja Division’s miniatures game, Relic Knights, had a bit of a bumpy start to its existence. But the company is looking to start anew and they’ve launched a Kickstarter campaign in order to make it a reality.

From the campaign:

Relic Knights: 2nd Edition is an anime-themed miniatures skirmish game featuring breathtaking models from Soda Pop Miniatures. In this dynamic miniatures game you control a heroic Knight and their enigmatic cypher. Fighting at their side are the warriors, psychics, and soldiers of the Last Galaxy. Relic Knights features a diceless, card-based game mechanic that puts you in control of your forces through managing esper to unleash devastating attacks, gallant defenses, and achieve strategic goals on the field of battle.

The goal of this Kickstarter is to fund a brand new edition of Relic Knights, featuring a fully updated rulebook, resculpts of many existing models, all new models to expand and customize your forces, the first Relic Knights expansion book—Void Break—and a brand new 2-Player Starter to make it easier than ever to join the battle for the fate of the Last Galaxy!

The campaign is already more than 2x funded with still 14 days left to go.

So I guess the market for embarrassing T&A minis remains as strong as ever.

    Really mixed feelings about this.

On the one hand, I like a lot about Relic Knights. I was in on the original KS, and ended up with a stack of minis and a really beautiful rulebook. I like the system and the fluff, and I think it’s a game that needs to exist – while Infinity has got serious, Shirow-style anime combat tied up, there’s nothing that simulates the flashy magitech action of shows like Nanoha.

But on the flipside, some of the old minis were so muddy in the details they were almost impossible to paint. And yes, the designers need to start watching something other than G-Taste – anime characters have a huge variety of body shapes, if you actually get around to watching some. I’ve got nothing against ‘voluptuous’ models, but why does every female in the game have head-sized breasts? Some variety would be nice, guys…

Oooh- they just unlocked two units (corsairs and diamond corps). Both are mixed gender units, and the women haven’t had extreme cosmetic surgery.

Definitely a step in the right direction.

At least they are going back to resin. The plastic miniatures I and friends got from their first Relic Knights kickstarter at times lacked facial features and other fine details. Perhaps this is why the overly exaggerated body types are used, because those features would actually be visible given the poor plastic and sculpting.

The sculpting was fine- you could tell with the old resin and metal minis.

I’ve got some of the new resin minis, and they’re super nice. Night and Day with the PVC line.
