The latest releases for Kings of War, Mantic’s fantasy battles miniatures game, are now available over in the Mantic webshop. There’s quite a lot to check out. There’s the Edge of the Abyss summer campaign supplement book for you veteran players. But you don’t have to be a veteran to play in it, of course. And to help new players get started, there’s the Battle of the Glades 2-player starter. That’s also available. Add to that some movement trays and some heroes, and you’ve got quite a thorough set of releases for the month.

From the announcement:

Mantic Games is pleased to announce that a fantastic selection of new Kings of War releases are now available in stores, just in time for the Edge of the Abyss global campaign. From new heroes, to giant monsters and useful accessories, there’s something for everyone.

The Edge of the Abyss global campaign – hosted by Beasts of War – starts on August 21st. Players will be able to decide the fate of Mantica, and the official map of the world will change depending upon the results. This is a fantastic opportunity for Kings of War fans to get involved and shape the future of the narrative.

Anyone play KoW? How does it compare to 8th edition fantasy?

I do play KoW but can’t comment on WFB 8th as I never played. What attracted me to KoW at the time was price and ease of play. It’s fundamentally a simple game that plays fast, and you don’t need to pay GW prices to get up to speed.

Now all that being said, there have been a few new contenders in the fantasy mass battles space recently, so KoW may lose some market share to the new kids. But as long as Mantic can maybe up the sculpt quality (early minis were ehhh but they have definitely gotten better over time) then they should be able to compete.
