New Dust dice available from Battlefront

Battlefront has what all gamers want: dice. They’ve got new dice for Dust Tactics that’ll be in the starter sets.

From the announcement:

The new dice are one of the new surprises in the upcoming starter sets.

Dust dice no longer have blanks on them, though you can still use the old dice instead of the new ones. We did not want blank sides on the dice. What does this mean in the game? Each die now has three symbols: a faction symbol, a shield symbol and a target symbol. Your unit symbol always is a success when rolling no matter what.

The other symbols are come into play when the rules would have you rolling for blanks. Instead of rolling for blanks with the new dice you now roll your faction symbol plus one of the other symbols depending on what you are rolling for, if you are rolling in a defensive situation then you add the shield and for attacking situations you add the targets.

Both the new and the old dice are covered in the new rule book so don’t worry- your old dust dice are still perfectly valid.

Not what Dust players want. The change is confusing what should be the easiest thing in the game. Battlefront and Paolo dropped the ball on this decision, and so far they’ve been pretty spot on.

[Curmudgeon alert] The old dice are better, because they’re easier to read. For the new dice, your brain must filter and interpret a mixture of symbols. With the old dice, your brain instantly saw what to count and what to ignore.

Absolutely useless & confusing. What is great with this game is its simplicity when you are playing : you have only to think about tactic and strategic matters, not about your dices…
That is not what DT players are wainting for.
Give starter packs for new players that are easy to play … , Give old gamers more units or characters

  • Change for the sake of change.

  • Checked the Dust site and they say “we didn’t like blanks on our dice and wanted to make them look cooler”. What they’re doing is taking something effective, elegant and iconic – the blank + hit dice are immediately recognisable as Dust – and making it needlessly complicated. I’m sticking with the old dice and really hoping they don’t use these to add needless complication.
