Masmorra is a massive dungeon complex underneath the city of Arcadia. But it wasn’t originally intended as a place of dark despair. No, this was a training ground for the various heroes all looking to become a member of the different Guilds of heroes within the city. However, the dark warlock Malaphyas has since decided “a dungeon needs an evil overlord in charge of it” and claimed himself as that evil overlord. Now, instead of Guild hopefuls, Masmorra’s corridors are full of Malaphyas’ minions. But, heroes being heroes (even if they’re just heroes-in-training) are going to do what they’re going to do. So it’s time to go clean out those dungeons and return them to the rightful owners. That’s the story behind Masmorra: Dungeons of Arcadia, which has just launched on Kickstarter.
Masmorra is not an expansion to Arcadia Quest. It is a new, stand-alone game set in the Arcadia universe. Players take on the role of heroes looking to clean out the dungeon, which is built from modular game tiles, so each time you play it will be different. Different tiles give you different challenges and opportunities. One might spawn new monsters, while another might have a giant pile of gold, while another might seem tame until a deadly trap is sprung. The monsters in the game are represented by special dice. When certain tiles are placed in the dungeon, the dice will be rolled and that’s what monster will be placed, again making every encounter new and different. The heroes also use dice to dictate what they will do for the turn. They have their own special dice with different actions on each side. The dice are rolled (with a single, optional reroll allowed) and then players pick which order they would like to do their actions allowed by those dice.
Anyway, as I mentioned, the campaign just launched and is set to run for another 15 days (this is a quick campaign, folks).
