With the new edition of Mansions of Madness being announced, the thing that got most people’s attention was the inclusion of a companion app that would now “run the game.” As such, that would turn Mansions into a fully cooperative experience. There’s been a lot of questions on what, exactly, the app will do, since it’s now a required part of the game. Well, Fantasy Flight has heard you and put up a preview of what you can expect.
So, in short, the App takes over for the Keeper player. It will generate the map, bring monsters out onto the board, reward you with items, and cause the mythos events to take place. The map that it creates is randomized each time you play, so you never quite know what’s going to be through the next door. Also, added to that, the app will keep those rooms hidden from you. So there’s no pre-knowledge of “the kitchen’s through here.” or anything like that. The fact that the App runs everything also give you the opportunity to play the game solo. Just pick 2+ investigators and get going.
Technology is becoming more a part of gaming all the time. From just having rulebooks online to having companion apps that help with some parts of gameplay, to the apps that are a vital part of the game. It’s interesting to see how things have evolved over the last 10-15 years.
