Fantasy Flight Games has announced a new XCOM board game they’ve been working on. Expect it to be available later this year.

From the preview:

In XCOM: The Board Game, you and up to three friends assume the roles of the leaders of the elite, international organization known as XCOM. It is your job to defend humanity, quell the rising panic, and turn back the alien invasion.

Where the world’s militaries have failed to stand against the alien invaders, you must succeed. To do so, you must make strategic use of the resources available to you. You must launch Interceptors to shoot down alien UFOs, assign soldiers to key missions, research alien technology, and use that technology to defend your base, all while you try to keep the world from collapsing just long enough that you can coordinate one final mission to repel the invaders for good.

Seems to miss the mark on the general attraction of the digital game franchise — the tension of the squad based tactical combat. Looks quite a bit abstracted here, and in fact, IIUC only one player has that role anyway.

While the big picture strategery section of the game was fine, I doubt that was the main draw for most people.

  • I hope it doesn’t get ruined like Blizzard’s Starcraft did.

  • You can’t play the original game without thinking “this would make a cool tabletop skirmish game”. If it was more modible the game engine would be great for bringing other popular skirmish games to the pc.

But I have to agree with grimbergen. This description sounds like a different thing.

  • Right, it seems more of a resource management thing, not a squad level game.

  • Huge XCOM fan since 1996, so I’m interested, even if it is mostly resource management . I like to demo things before I buy though. I wonder if they will have t for demo at Gen Con?

    • Whoops. Apparently it came out in 94, not 96. Either way.

I was hoping it would be more like Deadzone or Infinity or some other skirmish game.. I guess it’s possible to frankenstein some rules for that though.
