Everyone can use more dice

Leo Atreides has a Kickstarter campaign up and running for rollable 4-sided dice.

From the campaign:

d4 dice have a different game logic playout compared to d6. In the game in the picture a pair of d6 would have a play move max of 12, that makes the game tree too unpredictable and makes it hard for the player to plan and make their play. A pair of d4s reduce the max to 8 so the movement is not too complicated and the rate of doubles is 1:4 as opposed to 1:6 which introduces new design options.

Hoping the project creator sees this, but I have a few questions:

Are the numbers printed or engraved? Printed will rub off quite fast.
Why bother trying IP-protect these dice? If I back your KS I’d rather the money was spent on something productive instead of essentially wasted. I’ve seen dice this shape before, so I don’t know what IP you feel is yours to “protect”?
Why not use a D12 numbered 1-4 three times? It rolls and reads really well, and has faces with room for big numerals. Plus, if you like the 2D4 for your game mechanics, adding a little symbol or such to the corner of some faces give you a further degree of finesse.
I think some of the spelling and project pitch text is a bit… Odd. For example, why is it important (or relevant) what exact flag the dice colours match – do the other colours also match specific, identifiable, individual flags?
In your $8 pledge level, you have “INIFITE” dice.
Do you really want to advertise that you were caught by surprise by Easter – who’s date is marked on most calendars well in advance? If you were caught off-guard by Easter, it doesn’t bode well should there be any hitches in making the dice and supplying KS backers.

That will do for now. ;0)

Good points all. And although these aren’t 100% the same, they’re pretty similar, and already on sale :/ http://www.thediceshoponline.com/dice/5440/GluckHaus-Tetrosphere-Pewter-Polished-LTD-ED-D4-Dice

Just search for “rounded d4 dice”; you’d be surprised at how many like this (and indeed, more elaborate designs) already exist for sale all over the world.

That’s why when a sales pitch refers to means of legal protection for an ordinary and already-existing product, I get suddenly suspicious about why it needs such protection.

I actually need fewer dice, where is the KS offering a service to come take away all my spares?

    • You can just send them to me. :p

Ah, the good old days of 2nd Ed ADnD. Spend the night at a friend’s house to play a huge game.. get to the bedroom first and leave a few of the pyramid d4s for him to find. It was mutual though, I found my share of “goodies” left around when he would visit.
