Elite Encounters, a new RPG in the world of Elite, up on Kickstarter

Elite Encounters is a new pen and paper RPG based on the Elite Dangerous computer game (coming soon). They’re looking for funding, so go check ’em out.

From the campaign:

The goal of this campaign is to develop and produce a pen and paper roleplaying game (RPG) set in the universe of Elite: Dangerous, the upcoming third sequel to the original space simulation Elite.

20 years in the making, Elite: Dangerous looks set to redefine the genre its predecessor created, adding stunning visuals, a uniquely customisable multiplayer concept and an ever-changing immersive universe to explore, fight or trade in.

Elite Encounters, the first official roleplaying game set in the Elite universe, aims to take the experience to another level – away from the computer, onto the tabletop and into the imagination.

I can understand pledging for a first time author or for a product still under development, but I am baffled by people pledging for an RPG that doesn’t have page one committed to paper. For all anyone knows, they could end up with:

“Well, it says to roll 8d30 against something called gravrity flucks, but I can’t find anything about that in the index. There’s a modifier for which hand and how many fingers you are using though, with a -1 for each ring, and then another +10 bonus since you are a chromium-handed ape transvestite. You know what, let’s just say that you open the beer bottle without any difficulty.”

Then again, Synnibarr funded, so there’s a market for that stuff — although I expect it owes much to Something Awful.
