I’m just standing here with my jaw dangling open….

I used to think I was a good painter then…..yeah. I’ll go back to hiding in my closet now.

Holy crap- they actually got better from last year. And last year the winners were no slouches.

I guess that’s what you get for flying in the winners from Salute, Gencon and every other major painting competition that allows third party prize support.

Congrats Jose Palomares- that is a fantastic piece.

Fantastic pieces all around – Crystal Brush is an amazing competition!

  • Not to take anything away from these incredibly talented artists, but I wish the contest entries were simply painted miniatures. These are amazing to look at, but at this point the line is crossed between miniatures, and full scale dioramas and art projects. There is nothing wrong with that of course, but then where do you go to see a contest of the best painted miniatures (more or less as they come in their kits)? Just my humble thoughts.

I don’t mind dioramas to a certain degree. What I hate is when the contest levels up so much that it starts being a sculpting contest as much as a painting contest. At that point calling it a painting contest is somewhat disingenuous.

      • Well said. You put it better than I did.

        • blkdymnd

Agreed, what’s wrong with just painting models? That winning model, while cool, is just way too busy. Make a painting comp a painting comp.

          • I agree as well. I’d love to see a “Crystal Brush Miniature” category, where they produce a miniature for the competition(preferably on a sculpted base so there are no uber-basing shenanigans). And then all you could do is paint the miniature, no conversions, no additional basing, etc. I think that would separate the men/women from the boys/girls.

Don’t get me wrong I don’t want it to replace anything already there, as I love seeing the fantastic work. I’d just love to see something like this as it could really show off the painting part of the painting contest.

This is an excellent idea and fits in with CMoN’s love of producing limited minis for painting contests.

Much better results than last year. I thought, honestly, it wouldn’t go that well. My big complaint from last year was that technical execution was good, but I was seriously disappointed in concept. This year’s concepts look far, far better. With the money being given away for these things, while I still think the prize is too much (I certainly wouldn’t buy these miniatures for what they are winning in prize money), at least it is bringing out a better result.

Its my personal opinion that big prize money brings out the worst in people, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it did for this competition. But the miniatures do look better, and generally good. It also would be nice if giant filthy stinking heaps of money didn’t have to touch every single corner of art in the world, but I am sure the winners aren’t complaining, either.

I don’t really understand this complaint? If anything, I think the prize money gives some much needed creedence to the amazing art that these people DO perform. I don’t understand why offering prize money would be any kind of negative in this instance….

    • Ghool

The heaps of money offered as prizes are nothing but good news. It’s now actually worth-while to sink 200+ hours into a single model, diorama, or otherwise.

        Worthwhile if you win. 🙂

  • Marauder

    Simply amazing!
