5 Great Tabletop Game Conversions for iPad

Digital versions of your favorite tabletop games are becoming popular. They offer some fantastic benefits but also sacrifice some of the experience for convenience.

Virtual or Actual?

There are benefits and disadvantages to both iOS and physical versions of games.

It’s hard to cluster four players around a single iPad to play a game, but cleanup and setup is way, way faster with the iOS versions. Some titles can be sent to an Apple TV with AirPlay or Apple’s Lightning to HDMI adapter, making the small screen less of an issue.

“House rules” are nearly impossible on iOS games, unless already selectable in a preference somewhere in the game —for instance, some of the more popular Monopoly rules, like money on the “Free Parking” space are generally toggle-able.

One might think that the barrier to entry on the iOS is the cost of the iPad, but if you add up all the savings for all five titles here, you’re looking at about $500, far more than the retail of a new iPad.

Regardless of the list of pros and cons, iPad gaming goes far beyond simple school-house favorites, with something for everybody.

Fantasy Flight and Asmodee Announce Fantasy Flight Interactive

The real and the digital are blending more and more everyday. I mean. I’m real, but I work in digital all day. My office is as much this webspace as much as it’s the chair and flat surface my computer’s sitting on. That blending is spreading to our hobbies as well. Sure, we’ve had video games for decades and board games for centuries, but the two are coming together in new and inventive ways recently. Pushing that further forward is the new Fantasy Flight Interactive, a program from Fantasy Flight Games and Asmodee North America that will not only bring you digital versions of board games, but entirely unique gaming experiences as well.

Digital Version of Ogre Now Available

Auroch Digital has released the digital version of the Ogre tabletop miniatures game over on Steam.
… I should get a Steam account at some point… maybe…
Anyway, for those of you that actually have such an account, you can bring this classic game to your computer screens, sending your Fencers versus enemy G.E.V.s, or crushing infantry under the treads of your MkV (my personal favorite).

Digital Version of Ticket To Ride: First Journey Now Available

My nephew loves trains. He’s like 4 or so and just loves the things. One of his favorite things to play on his tablet is this train simulator thing. On my next visit to see him, I might see about trying to get him to play Ticket to Ride: First Journey. It’s now available digitally, and it seems like it’d be right up his alley.

Getting free stuff for watching games for charity. That’s what you’ll be able to do tomorrow, as Nomad Games will be giving away free digital copies of Talisman for those tuning into their Twitch and YouTube channels.

Ogre Video Game In the Works

One of my first games I got into was Steve Jackson’s Ogre. Heck, Ogre_Mk5 was a screen name I used for quite a long while. Well, there’s an Ogre/G.E.V. video game in the works that accurately recreates not just that video-box game, but all of the Ogre minis world on the tabletop. They’ve got some sceenshots and a trailer video to check out.

Today’s a day to celebrate. Why? It’s my 5th anniversary with TGN. Yes, on this day, 5 years ago, I made my first post on the site. It was the new plastic Warp Wolf kit that Privateer Press was coming out with. Oh how gaming has changed since then. I remember having a conversation, a couple months into my tenure, with Ross “The Legend” Thompson (my boss at the time) about, “These Kickstarter-things.”
So, to celebrate, let’s have a bunch of bite-sized gaming stories.

Friday Snippets

Time has been playing weird tricks this week, I feel. The first several days flew by. Thursday took an eternity. Now, today’s doing a little bit of both. I feel like it should be later than it is, so it feels like it’s been a long time since this morning… but I’ve also gotten a ton of stuff done. So I dunno. I do know that I’m possibly going to be playing some Guild Ball this evening and then some D&D tomorrow. So that’s cool. Better pack myself full of energy with some bite-sized gaming stories.

Today on the platter we have: New Imperial Knight Heads From Forge World, Knight Models Previews Suicide Squad Dice, Kromlech New Release: Legionary Shotgun, Angels and Demons join Flatminis 2D miniatures range, Shadows of Esteren Announces Partnership with Syrinscape, Talisman is Free to Play This Weekend Only, Comrades in Battle Reaches Funding Goal, 15mm Naval Crews Range is Back From Capitan Games, and Final Days for Tavern Masters Kickstarter.

This week seems just interminable. There’s still half of today to go. I’m hoping to make it through, though. Got some plans to hang out with a good friend this evening and have some pizza (homemade, as in the crust and the sauce started as things like bread flour, Roma tomatoes, onion, and some olive oil), then hopefully do some gaming tomorrow. Tomorrow’s plans just became a bit clouded, but still hoping they work out.

Either way, filling up on some bite-sized gaming stories will help. So let’s get to it.

On the platter today, we have: Knight Models Teases Next Release, Kromlech New Release: Guardsmen Veteran Heads, Prospero Expansion Released Talisman Digital Edition, Brother Vinni’s River Fear Now Available, and Frazetta’s Masterpieces: Death Dealer Up On Kickstarter.

Digital Version of Smash Up Available On Steam

I got the original set for Smash Up pretty soon after it came out. A friend had picked it up and we played at my LGS one evening. It was a hoot. Quick and easy to learn, with tons of replayability right out of the main box due to how you mix up two of the factions for your deck. Well, there’s been quite a few expansions that’ve come out since then, meaning if you wanted to carry it all around, it could be quite a hefty box you’re lugging with you. Well, now you can go digital and play online… and it’s free, too.

I don’t know about you, but for me, it seems like just yesterday was Wednesday. I’m not 100% sure what happened to Thursday (maybe Langoliers ate it?), but it’s already gone. That’s alright, mind you. I’m always ready for it to be the weekend. Best to power up with some bite-size gaming stories.

On the platter today we have: Circles of Imora Trading Card Game Coming To Kickstarter, Heroic Ballads ver. 1.1 Released, Nomad Games Releases Two New Warlords For Talisman: The Horus Heresy, The Army Painter Technique Painting Bundle Now Available, and Kromlech Weekend Promo Happening Now.

Seeing as how Monday I was in a car for about 13-14 hours, I didn’t get a chance to do the regular Terrain Corner piece. So, much as I did Friday, with the combined Snippets/Terrain Corner post, I’m giving you another of those today. Gotta catch back up from Gen Con.

There are lots of things that can keep a gaming group from actually getting a session in. For the longest time, “distance” was a big one. Well, with virtual tabletops becoming a much more regular thing, that’s not a factor. One of the most well-known virtual tabletops is Roll20. Well, they’ve teamed up with Wizards of the Coast to now officially bring Dungeons & Dragons adventures to the program.

Digital Edition of Smash Up Coming Soon

A bit of editorializing: I loved Smash Up when I played it after it first came out. We got it at my local shop near St. Louis and played many games. It was a good time had by all. But after a couple of the expansions came out, it was a little hard to keep up and to carry around the big box of extra cards. Thankfully, Nomad Games is going to be solving that with the digital edition of Smash Up coming soon.

New Digital Nordic Pack Available For Ticket To Ride

I have to say, there are some games that I’ve only ever played digitally. One such case is Ticket to Ride. It’s been a bit, but we used to play a game during lunch on a coworker’s tablet. Considering all the cards, the board, and all the pieces for the game, playing the digital version was really the only way we could get a game in while we ate. Well, a new Nordic map is available for the digital version of the game, and it just might mean we break it back out again at lunch.

There are various video games out there that draw their influence from various tabletop properties. But most of them don’t actually play like a tabletop game. But with Warbands: Bushido, you could play a miniatures game right on your tablet or smartphone. They’re up on Kickstarter now.

Battlefleet Gothic: Leviathans Coming To iOS

Battlefleet Gothic takes the ground-based battles we know oh so well from the 41st millennium and expands them up into the stars. Unfortunately, it’s a pretty rare thing to find on gaming tables these days. This is because HR Games and Funbox Media are teaming up to make it so.

Virulent Strain Added To Pandemic Mobile

For those of us here in the Northern Hemisphere, it’s cold and flu season. Already, several co-workers have come down with various illnesses that’ve kept them home. Personally, I’ve got an immune system tempered in the fires of “former janitorial supervisor at a major hospital.” And no, “supervisor” doesn’t mean that I didn’t stick my hands into things best left unmentioned. But it’s not just in the real world we have to worry about contagious diseases. The Virulent Strain has been added to Pandemic Mobile.

Nomad Games Announces Talisman: The Horus Heresy

One thing with board games going to a digital medium is that new versions of the game can come out that have new skins and new mechanics and such relatively easily. Such is the case with Nomad Games’ upcoming version of Talisman, which will take place in the grim darkness of a future of only war. That’s right, there’s going to be a The Horus Heresy version of Talisman.

Sandstorm Virtual Tabletop Relaunches on Kickstarter

Generally considered good words to live by for most things (example, if you fail to eat 20lbs of pudding, I don’t know if I’d really recommend trying it again), Idle Ideas Inc. has restarted their Kickstarter campaign for Sandstorm, their new virtual tabletop software. This new campaign has a few changes compared to the previous.
