Battle for Nethervein is a new board game up on Kickstarter. It takes its inspiration from many places, including fantasy and steampunk in terms of setting, and from MOBA video games in terms of theme. The mechanics use a simultaneous play mechanic, so there’s lots of bluffing elements that add to the real-time feel of the game.
Players are in control of either the Swarm or the Syndicate and the various heroes that go along with them. The heroes are moved around the board via movement dials (think something like in X-Wing). The dials are set and remain hidden until everyone reveals them at once. Then heroes move to their designated locations. If heroes end up contesting the same spot, then a battle ensues, with players placing their battle cards face-down and, again, revealing them at the same time. In order to use the card that’s played, you must discard cards from your hand. So hand management is crucial. Heroes can also level up, depending on their exploits on the board, giving you access to more powers and stronger attacks.
The Kickstarter campaign is up and running now. They’re about 1/4 of the way to their goal with still 28 days left on the clock.
