  • Ask Matt Wilson and Erik Yaple

Matt Wilson and Erik Yaple from Privateer Press have agreed to answer TGN reader questions about their upcoming Monsterpocalypse game.

I think you all know the drill. Post your questions in the Comments section and we’ll pick the best ones to send to Matt and Erik for their answers. We’d like to keep the questions focused on Monsterpocalypse but if you have some good general questions to ask either, or both, of them then do feel free to post them.

This post will be up on the site until Sunday night when comments will be closed and I will be sending the questions to Matt and Erik for their answers. Thanks to Matt and Erik for agreeing to this Q&A session and to Bobby at Privateer Press for arranging it.

Update: Comments are closed and we will be posting the questions that we will be sending to Matt and Erik

    Zac says:

Any details that you can give us regarding the first expansion for the game?

    gavroche says:

I’d like to know if PP have any plans for plastic miniatures for Warmachine or Hordes (either along the lines of the GW multipart kits or the Rackham prepainted miniatures approach).

    gavroche says:

Oops sorry, overlooked that it was supposed to be about Monstercalypse! Zac, can you remove my question?

    tuco says:

Or leave it in. Since they’ve made an all-plastic game now, I’m not sure if gavroche’s question is that far off the topic.

    Trent McCaffrey says:

To rephrase as an on topic question:

Will you be leveraging your experience with Monsterpocalypse plastic miniatures to Hordes & Warmachine?

    briguy says:

gavroche: Well, we do know that this is something they are actively looking into. I remember hearing this in an interview with Matt Wilson on both Podthralls and the D6 Generation podcasts. I’m not really sure that anything more will be forthcoming at this point, as he indicated at that point in time the plans were still reasonably preliminary.

    grendal says:

I was looking for the rules but could not find them (the old link seems to be dead).

will there be “storyline” events where players can influence future sets?

    nanite (Seth) says:

Are there any plans to mitigate “power-creep?” Wherein each new set is much more powerful then the last, and older models become nearly useless?

Also will you be trying to keep the number of models and units in each release small, as opposed to other collectible games (Wizkids Pirate’s card game, Wizard’s Star Wars, etc.)?

    marky says:

What types of expansions do you have planed for the future. Do you plan to add more agendas? Will the maps always be the same size or will you ever make larger ones. (granted I have not seen any others than those in the Pre-release starts).

    a_thousand_hats says:

Is the supported organised play going to be US only or are there plans in place for organised play events in the UK and elsewhere?

    gold_penguin says:

will all the monsters eventually have mega forms?

are there any other hyper forms besides the mega and ultra forms planned?

    mathieu says:

Are there any plans to release some of the monsterpocalypse monsters in pewter/resin/unpainted-unmounted plastic for more modeling-oriented folks? I am not necessarily thinking about casting the same models as the PPP ones, more something along the line of the “Extreme” Hordes models.

    Gaebril says:

I have heard on thed6g podcast that these figures are being produced in china, and being pre-painted products, what have Privateer Press done to ensure the safety of these products? This may sound overly paranoid. However, in light of recent poisoning fears as well as strings of bad records, this is something I would really like to know.

Reason being this: I personally am planning to use this as a gateway drug for my own kids. While alot of us have played with lead miniatures before and knows how to handle potentially poisonous material, kids of younger age are not as cautious.

    blkdymnd says:

I posted this on the PP forum, and though it’s not a question per se, I would like to know the reasoning behind it (Zac could obviously shorten it to asking length)..

This is probably easily the biggest release PP has ever had. TGN reports that every starter has sold out. Thats huge. So what do we get for the biggest launch in their history? “You do it.”

I don’t get the whole… We’ll send you prize support, but do whatever you want, whenever you want, it’s no biggie to us.

Where is the giant coordinated release event that screams “Giant Monsters have invaded the world!!!!” Instead we get, “Meh, here are big monsters, have fun….”

My LGS, who is very close to PP in both location and in business contact didn’t even realize that they had to come up with the events on their own without any guideline except to give out these prizes. Thats a week and a half before the release without realizing.

I really think PP purposely missed the boat on how big a splash this release could have been. I’m pretty disappointed. I’m very happy with the game, just bewildered by the lackluster release.

    LarkinVain (Joel) says:

I personally like the do whatever you want, whenever you want. Not all LGS have their own gaming space.

One of our larger ones have to rent out nearby conference rooms for players every week to have space to game. If PP took a hard line approach to this my LGS would not be able to participate.

The earliest date we can do our launch event is the first week of November. The folks at PP don’t work directly with the players at the same level as do the folks at the local shop do.

I think shops need this flexibility to cater to their locals, they don’t need someone without any direct contact with the local community dictating exactly on how things should be ran.

    blkdymnd says:

Ok, thats cool if this was “ask Larkin Vain” ;) j/k

The Hordes release was gigantic with the coordinated event in ‘05 and I think this could have been bigger for those that could have participated (not that its not going to be a huge release anyway, I just think it could have been a way bigger splash). You could then do two more store run events afterwards (since we’re doing 3 anyway) for those that are in different situations. Also, the communication about it was sort of vague, as I said my LGS didn’t even realize it until yesterday.

So thats why I’m asking Matt and Erik about it.

    Annerios says:

Will future expansions provide other Kaiju movie staples like scientists, civilians the monsters are fixated on, cars or fuel tankers to toss around, etc? There is mention in the Terrasaur information of eco-terrorists following the big lizards around brandishing weapons, so will we see infantry units to secure buildings or is the scale too small to make it feasible (even though you are not adhering to a specific scale and are going with what looks good for the game)?

Is there a giant insect faction in the works for the 1950’s movie fans?

    LarkinVain (Joel) says:

    @blkdymnd

Heheh, I’m trying to promote my self importance :) I guess for those without an active PG wanting to promote the game in their area, I can see where communication about was a problem. I know for a fact none of my shops had no idea of the release pack thing until I brought it up to them and had them re-do their orders.

    tinman_xl says:

What’s the likely hood of me being able to walk into a Borders or Barnes & Noble store and seeing MonPoc boosters and starters?

    Zac says:

They have them advertised on their website so I would think that your local store may have them. You can probably phone them and ask as they should know by now whether they will be stocking them

    dark404 says:

Will there be any translation for European countries (like France for example) ? Who is the distributor for Monsterpocalypse in France/Europe ?

    LarkinVain (Joel) says:

Why is the grid 17 x 17? I was going to make a custom map but wanted to make it as tiles. To my surprise I find that map is not divisible with a whole number and therefore not able to be tiled. It just strikes me as odd to pick such an odd number (no pun intended) for the map grid.

    shwtd says:

@Dark404 : Distributor in France is Play Factory
    http://www.playfactory.fr/monsterpocalypse/

For the rest of Europe, I’d place my bet on Millenium in Spain, Ulisses in Deutschland and maybe SMG in UK and Magik Market in Italy…
