You just know that this one is going to be a beauty of a paint job.

It looks like it got a lot of attention at the concept stage too - that’s the most sketches I’ve seen for this line.

I hope the sculptor corrects that gumby-bone lower leg. Great drawing, but yikes.

That brings up an interesting question. When a sculptor works from another artist’s concept, are they generally required to try to match the art exactly? Do they have the freedom to correct what they may see as an anatomical error? How much license does a sculptor usually have to change details etc on from the concept?

As someone who does miniature sculpting, I can answer that somewhat. The amount of freedom awarded the scupltor depends alot upon the knowledge of the concept artist in what can be sculpted and cast. A piece of concept art like Fatina was most likely done by someone who has little knowledge of the scuplting/casting process. The hair and silks will have to be done very differently than the art in order to be able to cast it, so in this case I would think the sculptor would have a fair bit of leeway on the more precise details, and the concept art is meant to be a blueprint for the foundation for the model.

I personally would use the concept art to build an armature and then add details that stay consistant with the concept art(hair length, the idea of the flowing silks and other more characterful details) and do my own take on them so that they can be cast easily.

And yes I would correct any anatomical problems when I built the armature as standard practice.

Thanks for your informative answer Chad.

I’m interested in seeing the green now to see how this sculptor handles it.
