Catalyst Game Labs have announced a plan to bring back the classic BattleTech books to stores.

    From their website:

Catalyst Game Labs announces the return of novels for Classic BattleTech, MechWarrior, and Shadowrun. The re-launch of these perennial lines will include an amazing selection of authors—including New York Times’ Bestselling Author Michael A. Stackpole.

“The triumphant return of three of the most seminal adventure gaming book lines heralds a great next step for all the brands,” David M. Stansel-Garner, Operations Manager for Catalyst Game Labs said. “We’re really excited to bring these novels back to thousands of eager fans who have been waiting patiently for their return.”

Bestselling author and owner of InMediaRes Loren Coleman will return to pen more novels in the Classic BattleTech line. “In 1994 I read through the Warrior trilogy in a single weekend. I’ve been a devoted fan ever since. I expect to feel much the same way as I pick up the new storyline installments. Working with top writers on a compelling storyline is one of my greatest joys as a writer. Coming back to it now—and with Mike back on board as well—it’s like our favorite park has just been reopened. I’ll bring the green army men. He’ll supply the fireworks.”

Look for the first MechWarrior novel, A Bonfire of Worlds by Steven Mohan, Jr. in November 2008, followed by the first Classic BattleTech novel, Shadows of Faith by Loren L. Coleman in December. The first of the all-new Shadowrun novels will appear in January, 2009.

I wonder if they will get the rights to reprint some of the older novels?

    3. IvanR says:

CGL stated a while back that amongst the first releases is a hardback omnibus version of Michael Stackpole’s Warrior Trilogy, so they at least have the rights to some older stuff. Whether they reprint it is a wait and see thing.

I already have loads of the BT novels, it would be nice to see some of them out new again!

Plus the Clans can ride again, before it got really silly with the Jihad and all that nonsense.

Shadowrun would be good as well!

Life forced me to sell off mine (I think I had 70-75% of all the books set before the FedCom civil war) so I would be interested in some of the trilogies being collected up as omnibuses. I wouldnt say the Jihad is silly (Im a Comstar player so Ive seen all the notes and plot hooks they wrote in to lead up to this) but I still think some of the best books were those written in the old time period - Blood of Kerensky trilogy was good too, even if Stackpole had mechs brew up in ways they werent supposed to and Vlad modified an omnimech beyound what was allowed.

It’s nice that I’ll be able to pick up brand new editions of classic Shadowrun books that have gone out of print long ago (Ah, Nigel Findley… may he rest in peace). Nothing against the newest generation of SR books, but SR 4th ed. just made everything silly (I’m sorry, but there is no such thing as a “hacker” in my SR, thank you), so I’d be glad to see some of the old guard return.

Plus, there are a lot of great BattleTech books I never got around to reading or that are hard to come by nowadays without settling on a used copy that is about ready to fall apart.
