    TGN Chat

So what are the your favourite games that no-one plays? Games you love either for the rules, background or minis and yet you can’t get local players to try.

I guess that will be Dark Age… awesome models and rules, but considering that if you add together all the wargamers of my country (probably 200 top) if you apply percentages of gamers of the USA, for example you will end up that if 2% of all US wargamers play Dark Age that will correspond to 4 people on my current universe, and that’s about the same amount of people that have models for this game. Being all of us primary collectors, and since there are too many alternatives I’ve managed to play this game like four times and that’s when I playtested stuff for DA…

    LarkinVain (Joel) says:

Dark Age comes to mind. It’s been out for a long while but I still can’t get people to play it. The rules are great and he models are very ice.

For games that just came out, I’d say AE-WW2. Great rules.

    ysambart says:

Stargrunt 2. Every once in a while you get a 40k player who pulls out the silly ‘realism’ statements. I get them to run through the Stargrunt rules as the next step up in realism and they almost always slink back to GW’s fun, but beer and pretzels game. Pity. Free .pdf these days, too!

    briguy says:

I’ve tried Supersystem a few times, and not had anybody leap up and down about it. Although I honestly think that’s more a matter of not many of my friends having enough time to game very much anyways.

But I think it’s a fun, not too serious game that people might enjoy.

    It’s an ongoing quest. :-)

    Proclivity says:

    Battlefleet Gothic…

    Epic…

great games, made me want to try out all the specialist games…

    Brett says:

I liked the Supersystem game we played, Briguy. I think it’s a combo of too many games and too little time :D.

Infinity is the game I’d love to see more of, or more accurately some of :D.

    1voice2many says:

Infinity wins hands down in my book. I’ve never played a more satisfyin’ game, whether I win or lose. Confrontation 2 & 3 were great too, but Infinity beats them as the best. I’d really like to find some Hell Dorado or Anima Tactics players too. Hell, I have to drive an hour to meet up with a fellow Infinity player.

In a city as big as the one I live in with as many game stores as we have if you ain’t playin’ Waryammer $49.95K or Warmascream from PP you’re outta luck. Its sad really. I’ve never seen two games bring out the worst in people the way those two do. And the thing is neither is that bad of a game.

    Bob says:

Full Thrust. Great mechanics but only one of my regular gaming partners will play and we don’t often get around to Full Thrust.

    Chad says:

I just finished reading and somewhat commiting to memory the infinity rules and they look fantastic. As soon as I get my models painted we can play Brett! And that might happen sooner than later, the film I am working on just got put on hold due to the pending actors stike(guess we’ll have to wait a bit longer for snake-spider hybrids on a space plane…darn) so more time painting time for me.

Hell Dorado also interests me a great deal. The fluff for it is very cool, and the rules look pretty tight.

    Stu says:

Funnily enough for me it’s Warhammer 40k and Warhammer Fantasy! The majority of my gaming mates have at least one GW army, but we find ourselves playing Mordheim/Necro and Flames of War these days…

    Gitteau says:

Confrontation 3, Helldorado, Infinity. I would settle for Mordheim or Necromunda, but even those don’t go over.

    Hunter says:

Infinity, hands down. Can’t get anyone interested in it locally. “That costs money! I don’t want to paint more figs! Ooh, 40K Apocalypse…” :(

    blkdymnd says:

Dark Age for sure. Though we finally got a few to try here locally and hopefully it will pick up steam. Infinity has to be the vote for game that no one wants to try here locally. Other than those two, a very good variety gets played here… mostly due to my addictions afflicting others :)

    Aajz_Solari says:

Hmmm, lessee. Infinity, Urban War, and Anima Tactics would be my top three, but Necromunda, Mordheim, C3, and AT-43 are all short on players around here, too.

    chopa says:

Either Rezolution or Wargods, I’m thankful that we have a fair amount of people with Dark Age in the area so its the other 2.

    uzo says:

    Hell Dorado.

Rules are a great blend of Confrontation and War Machine and the miniatures are some of the best on the market at the moment. The background is interesting, but might be too much for some. Also, lack of official English support is currently hurting it but hopefully that will be resolved soon.

    Doc says:

    Battle Fleet Gothic, Mordheim

    headzombie says:

    Epic.

    keltheos says:

    Still in print:
Rezolution (great rules, background, figures just haven’t caught on in my area).

    Out of print:
Great Rail Wars (zombie cowboys, how can you lose?!)

    Winterman says:

Definitely Dark Age and Wargods of Aegyptus. Both have great minis. The rules for Wargods are seemingly unsung in the world of unit-based wargames. And Dark Age is Brom. BROM! It just seems like everyone around here always points to “money” as the main reason they won’t branch out. But they’ll spend their paychecks on GW and PP. I love PP stuff, but I like variety as well. Money is for buying cool stuff.

    sataniel says:

Dark Age! There are no Dark Age players in my country at all. Oh, sweet Romania… :)

    Sergeant_Crunch says:

CAV2. It has a small, but ferociously loyal, following that is slowly recruiting people to fight in the Second Galaxy War.

    gavroche says:

Crossfire. Probably because it’s historical, deviates from the run-of-the-mill approach & has a steep learning curve.

    Veritas says:

Games I love most that I can’t get players for:

Infinity: Amazing rules with equally amazing minis. I’m finally convincing some locals to try it out.

Dark Age: The books are a little lack luster when compared with other stuff on the market today, but the rules are fun, the background is good and the models are fun to paint. Most people don’t even know this game exists where I am.

Vor: Long out of print, I’m dying for the rumored Vor 2.0 Skuzzy is supposedly working on. My NeoSoviets want to shake up the Maelstrom again. :)

    Janzerker says:

Oh but Veritas, your case is different. Living in Japan is not the best place to play miniatures wargames and I bet you must have a hard time trying to find players for any game.

    Veritas says:

@Janzerker: Actually there’s a store in Osaka that’s got about 12 40K and Fantasy players on the average weekend. And about 4 or 5 Warmachine players. Warhammer is getting a little bit bigger here. GW’s got company stores in Tokyo again after a long absence.

    Philip A says:

    Warhammer Quest.

    Robert says:

Guess I’m really lucky - I’ve gotten to play several games of Infinity and Dark Age this year. And we’re lining up some VOR soon. I was even just in the Epic Armageddon tourney at Games Day Baltimore….

My group is pretty wildly diverse, largely because I’m crazy and force them to drool over dang near every new shiny game that comes out.

I guess the one that I really never got to play would be the Great Rail Wars and WarGods. I’ve got forces for both but they never really got any traction at all with my playing group.

    stormwolf says:

Kryomek excellent fluff & artwork, the rules are good as well but the models suffer from either being excellent to merely adequate. If it had an official troop design system and some more gizmo’s it might have even replaced 40K RT.

Stargrunt II: Like the design aspect & the Tuffley-verse background, but the way it plays is more suited to skirmish than the large battles that you want to play with it.

Dirstide II: Same comments as for SG2.

Hammer’s Slammer’s & Hammer’s Anvils: Nice fairly simple game, crying out for a 6mm line of minis to support it though, and you can`t beat the background can you?

Mecha Carnage: By Gomi Designs, simple little game of mech combat, anyone else play it?

    SW

    GrimDog says:

I am lucky to be in a gaming group that tries different games. But, the games I don’t see represented enough in my area (cleveland, oh) would be:

    1. Lord of the Rings - I love this game, but no one touches it in my area.

    2. Infinity - This game is big in my small group, but outside us I haven’t seen it anywhere. No stores in the area stock it. Euro - dollar rate is killing most of these euro games.

    3. Dark Age - It was huge around here for a while and just died. Publisher just isn’t releasing stuff and keeping it fresh fast enough.

    Honorable Mention :

Hell Dorado - I can’t really put this up there yet as the fact that they haven’t released the official rules and cards in english is holding off pretty much anyone who is interested in our area.

    cannondaddy says:

    Navia Drapt

    metalminimadness says:

Anima tactics is the winner for me. Got the starter and a few mercenaries all painted up. I got one of my friends to buy a starter but he’s crapped out on it. The other guy I play WM with is ready to sell his collection and get out.The closest store went out of business right around new years. At this point if it’s not easy to put on the table right away, I can’t garner much interest. Also many in my group have turned to RPG’s. The only good part is that let’s me use my minis there.

    kaiserx says:

Infinity hands down. Great game, great concept, amazing minis. For me is that after playing clix and WM, Infinity rules and squad creation system is somewhat “messy”.

    nanite (Seth) says:

CAV 2. In production, but no one around here will play.

    Ken says:

I second Canondaddy’s Navia Dratp. It was my initial thought, but since it’s not a proper miniatures wargame, I hesitated. The game is brilliant, deep and strategic. It suffers from a bizarre Japanese theme and unpronounceable game terms (”Dratp” “Gyullas”, etc.). It was billed as collectible, but I “collected” the whole set in one ebay boxset purchase for less than $50. The game includes the best mechanics and aspects of chess, resource management games, customizeable army selection, and variable player powers to form the most underappreciated game I know of.

    Magno says:

INFINITY. Only two players in LGSs and lots of lookers but no takers. Primarily because none of the LGSs carry the figs. The other store carries a little Dark Age and Rezolution and they have a growing player base.

Anima Tactics and Helldorado are also not being played and despite the saturated Fantasy market, these games deserve their place.

    gavroche says:

So, why don’t people play these great games? I can understand for the really obscure ones, but Infinity, Dark Age & a couple of others seem to be well-supported with miniatures & supplements, and to be fairly well promoted, at least on the web.

    YoungOlo says:

Warzone. Fantastic ruleset, lovely universe and… poor marketing resulting in such a great game ending its life in collectors’ memoirs instead of first places in top-game lists :( I still own a couple of armies, but have no-one in my area to play with for several years now.

Oh, and please don’t tell me Warzone is about to come back with the new “Mutant Chronicles” CMG from FFG, because the only thing these two games have in common is the name of the universe :(

    evernevermore (John) says:

@ Gavroche - its an uphill struggle to get people to play a game that they cant go to the local shop or club and find a player easily. Sometimes, like with PP, a groundswell will catapult a game to success but others arent so lucky. I personally would love to drag some of the people Ive met away from 40k and PP and play some of the other skirmish games out there, but its really hard to match the accessibility of the big games (and even more so with the excitement over 40k5)

    P-ko says:

    -Gavroche:
no idea why really, but i can guess
    - fear of starting something that may or may not live. we gamers are known to drop a game as soon as it’s no longer supported(generalization, but somewhat true). so why invest in a game that may just die. better wait and see, and then start. of course, if it died because majority of gamers acted like that is a proof they were right. this also includes people that will only play of a game seems popular, so they have many players to game with, preferably at tournaments.
another reason is money. this actually is a bit counter-logic, but many players say that they do not want to pay for models for another game…and then happily go and buy models for what they’r playing now(i hear that argument from GW gamers most often, who then happily spend another 50Ł on two tanks for their already massive army), even if the money they’d spend on say, three squads for their game would buy them entire range of their faction’s models for a skirmish game.

third reason is unwillingness to try something new. not money, not how widespread the game is, but just the fact that they know the rules and tricks for their current game, and won’t bother learning another one, as they feel comfortable as they are. that’s pretty much a lost cause, very hard to get that kind of player started on anything new.

as for great game noone plays? not infinity, i’m lucky enough to live in a area where the game cought on just fine, but Full Thrust is something that really is different to usual games, and hardly anyone plays it, like any other space game. also Anima, which seems to be passed in favour of bigger games.

    Trent McCaffrey says:

I’ve often thought that this site should be called Tabletop Gaming News for Gamers that may/may not play GW games, but most definitely play other games too :)

I think the company-specific fans spend most of their time on Warseer, Warhammer.org.uk or other dedicated forums.

    Sergeant_Crunch says:

Regarding Full Thrust, if you to the Starship Combat Forum at star-ranger.com as well as the starship gaming forum at TMP it would seem that Full Thrust is doing quite fine as far as people playing it. It just needs a rules update and consolidation that I don’t forsee happening anytime soon.

    PMMJ says:

Savage Worlds Showdown: easily adaptable rules for multiple settings. Free online.

Supersystem: as noted above. Best supers system in town, highly versatile.

I’d love to see Rezolution break out, as well. It’s, hands-down, the *best* cyberpunk minis game out there.

Pleased to hear Vor may be making a comeback, I love me some Growler action.

And Warzone was one of my first loves, but I can’t make the scale jump to the new Mutant Chronicles game. Should please the Inquisitor crowd, though.

    joechummer says:

Wargods unfortunately doesn’t have a big enough fanbase in my area, so I’ve been reduced to playing solely at conventions… which is sad because Crocodile didn’t have any presence at the only convention I could make it to this year…

    Brant says:

I suppose for me it would be the following:

Anima Tactics: Just started playing. A friend and myself are just getting going and while painting some figures at the LGS had some people express interest.

Infinity: I have the book and two starter armies that I have had for over a year and have played it once. The only people at my LGS that know of it as far as I know are the few people I played with a year ago.

Dark-Age: Ahhhh, Dark-Age. I love this game to death but haven’t put any time in the past year and a half into it. I was one of the official demo people at GenCon 2006 which was fun but that was the last time I played. I might try to get some people into it soon since I have more than enough figures to let at least 4 people play at once.

I’m not going to put Rezolution on here like some others. I played Rezolution right when it came out and loved the mechanics, but the figures killed it for me. Most of them just aren’t any good and I haven’t heard much of anything about the game for a while now.
