  • GW recall Hand Flamer Spray Gun

Games Workshop Canada has sent a notice to retailers that they are recalling their Hand Flamer Spray Gun. No word if this extends to all GW locations but one has to assume that it will.

Update: the gun appears to be back on the market.

    From their announcement:

As most of you are aware, we had our scheduled release for our spray gun for Saturday June 21st 2008. Unfortunately Games Workshop has decided to recall all spray guns that have been manufactured to date. As we are all aware, quality and customer service dominate GW business. And due to this diligence we have just discovered a quality defect in the spray guns.

The defect does not make the product dangerous, but since we cannot be 100% confident in the quality of this product we have decided that the best course of action is to remove the spray gun from distribution until we can correct the problem.

Games Workshop is deeply sorry for any inconveniences that this may cause you and your customers. …
Again, we are deeply sorry and we will work through the issue to deliver the spray gun as soon as it meets Games Workshop’s high standards.”

    Someone got immolated…

    Zac says:

Rolled a 1 to hit while spraying and failed their Jam roll.

    Sergeant_Crunch says:

I’m guessing somebody figured out they could put gasoline in the paint cup.

    Zac says:

And you know someone is going to try that :-(

Not really smart making it look like a hand flamer

    djgustav says:

If that is why these got recalled, and not because of a defect, you know the value of any that were purchased just shot through the roof. Watch for it on ebay. Crazy what people will do!

    Doc says:

maybe they realized they work with non-GW paints…

When I find it on Youtube I’ll be sure to post it.

That suggests the defect is in the guns, not the customers. I bet it is a clogging or some other issue. Good airbrushes have some delicate parts that can be prone to jamming.

The defect is in the tubes that feed the paint. Apperently one can break in a way that could hurt someone - so they need to replace some tubes and send them back out.

    a_thousand_hats says:

Guess I won’t be getting one of these just yet then.

    CPBelt says:

Save your money and buy a real airbrush. ;-)

    a_thousand_hats says:

lol - I knew someone would say that.

I’m only interested in something for quick undercoating/toning on terrain and tanks so a ‘proper’ airbrush would be a bit over the top (and take up too much space).

    farseer says:

The defect is in the cap that attaches to the propellant. The threads that attach the hose to the cap are plastic and can strip when reused overtime. The hose then will not sit properly and the propellant leaks. The cap was supposed to be metal, but the final shipped product had a plastic cap.

This is not meant to be a “real” airbrush. Its an entry level, basecoat system and is not meant to do detail work. For little Johnny or most people who dislike painitng miniatures, this is a pretty good product for them. Its actually less expensive than the entry level one that Bagder and others do. And to boot, the propellant they are selling is $8.00, $2.00 cheaper than other brands!

    evernevermore (John) says:

Wait you said GW is cheaper then the existing brands? LOL - listen to the Anti GW crowd twitch in shock :P

Has anyone compared price with the basement model Aztek from Testors?

    littleleadheroes says:

WHAT THE…??? The new version of 40k is getting good reviews, now GW is selling something cheaper than competitors!! IT’S THE END TIMES!! PREPARE FOR RAGNAROK!

    cannondaddy says:

    I think Ragnarok is prepainted…

    evernevermore (John) says:

10 points for Cannondaddy comment :p

@littleleadheroes - its worse, the new version of 40k has even succeeded in winning back Privateer evangilists too

    Netherghoul says:

you can’t expect GW to release a proper airbrush.
Everyone with airbrushing experience can see that GW’s Airbrushgun is an utter failure.
You can get get way much better starter sets from reknown experienced airbrushcompanies nowadays.

GW had better stick with their miniatures and leave the fields of excellent tools and the like alone.

    evernevermore (John) says:

Um Netherghoul - they are doing exactly the same thing Testors did a few years ago, and now Aztek airbrushes are respected in modelling.

    Netherghoul says:

Yeah ofcourse quality companies making starter sets makes perfect sense, GW doing hardware imho simply sucks due to the insane lack of quality.
We test their stuff before selling it in a proffesional modelling store, having experience in the field made me convinced because of the lack of quality of GW products.
It makes no sense claiming to be a quality company when releasing rubbish Hardware imho.

    Zac says:

Can we tone the hyperbole down a bit please.

As I mentioned previously, this isn’t an open invitation to generally slam GW. So lets not do that any further please.
