    • Legendary Encounters second wave coming soon

    Reaper Miniatures have announced that the second wave of Legendary Encounters figures will be in stores soon.

    From their website:

    The second wave of Legendary Encounters Pre-Painted Plastics have come aboard, and we’re going to start getting them out to our retailers during ReaperCon. This round has a hard release date of May 28th, 2008. That’s when we’re getting them in our online store, and when your local retailers (at least in the US) should have them, too.

    Here’s a full listing of what’s going to hit:

    I love how the promo minis at the bottom of the page look nothing like the horrid paint jobs of the real product! I’ll pass.

    Those aren’t promo pieces. They are paint masters that are sent to the factory as examples of the colours.

    It is the reason why Wizards doesn’t post photos of the paint/production masters for their minis any more. It makes the final versions look like heck.

    The ‘dirty’ figures look ok, like the undead and the purple worm. But PPP elves are still the real test, and in this case I don’t really think they get a passing grade.

    They are aimed more at RPGers in any case. The market appears to be those people POed at buying random packs of D&D Miniatures boosters to get the figs they want.

    I am impressed by Reaper’s “truthiness” in showing both photos.

    Might pic a few up - again - if it looks good at arm’s length it will work most of the time for me.

    The ghost & worm look decent enough (both in sculpting & paintjob). The elf looks like it got timewarped from the eighties, unexpressive face, very flat wooden pose, only the basic colours blocked in, hardly any shading or highlighting. In fact they all look like they came directly out of those old AD&D monster manuals, which strikes me as profoundly uncreative, but to others is probably the main point of attraction.

    They actually look better in person and the more recent releases look a lot better than the first wave that came out.

    Well I think having them all look like they came out of a D&D Monster Manual as thats pretty much the target audience. Line one wasnt fantastic but when you need orc no 34 for tonights RPG they are perfect (and they look better IRL rather then the online photos. Just remember they arent there for the great looks or important characters, just letting you have the number of minions you need for a RPG session is the goal.

    I just wonder what a shot of matt sealer would add to the overall cost/process?

    You can do it yourself, but again, I don’t think that’s what the target demo is going to do.
