Sorry Robert. Didn't mean that to sound disparaging in any way. I was just repeating the analogy you brought up when you and I first discussed the differences in our games. It's fantastic that your expansion is working well!

Take care. Off to paint some more models!

I think the simplest solution is to just play both games but I am very biased when it comes to Weird WWII gaming.

Zac, I think you’re pushing the model count a bit.

I was pushing it in both cases but perhaps you are right that 30-40 is a better range.

I play with a lot of Zombies :-) I have 22 done up so far :-) It influences my model count to a tiny degree.

Actually if you dive into the AE forum you will find that the AE system scales up very nicely. We have had no issues with folks playing games on a larger scale. In fact we have one crew in particular that plays large games on a weekly bases and post battle reports on their large battles.

Yes AE is an outstanding game at the skirmish level but it also rocks and is fast paced at a Platoon level.

Cheers,
Robert

Zac, I think you're pushing the model count a bit. While its certainly possible to play very large games with the secrets engine (like whole platoons of mechs), the optimum model count is in the range of 30-35 depending how elite your guys are. In other words, about the size of a platoon. Most of my platoons have a command section, two squads, a couple of infantry support weapons, and a mech or two.

You can build a viable platoon with 15 models in it or 50 but usually it is a number right smack in the middle of those two.

The game works perfectly great at the squad level as evinced by a couple of scenarios that are included in the book but that is not its focus.

I think your comparison of the two games: Secrets is to Warhammer Fantasy as AE WWII is to Mordheim is valid though Secrets is 1/3 the scale of WFB. The games have two different objectives and the rules are scaled accordingly. Secrets will not be as engaging as AE-WWII with 5 models on a side, and AE-WWII will be less weildy at 35 models. Just like what would happen if you played warhammer with 5 models and Mordheim with 35!

That guy there is standing on a 50mm base.

The mini can be seen in Grant's Salute 2008 photos next to some other minis

http://www.tabletopgamingnews.com/salute-2008-photos?nggpage=2

Second row, middle picture

SoTR is more akin to 40K and AT-43 in size of game. So where AE-WWII has 15-20 minis a side you probably have 40-50 a side in an SoTR game.

Units in AE-WWII are 2-4 models and in SoTR units are 10-20 models
