    VOR 2.0 announced

Mike Nielsen has announced that work has started on a new version of the VOR sci-fi combat rules.

    From his announcement:

Yes its true VOR 2.0 is in the works. I’ve been working on it for a bit now. And let me say I’ve been having quite a good time doing so. It’s also true that a certain “red shirt” got in touch with me recently in regards to VOR (how he tracked me down is a mystery, I think he used sorcery). Nothing official with that at this point but certainly some potential.

Regardless tho, VOR 2.0 is going to happen. The details on it’s release, format, etc are still pending.

So what facts can I give you…

    • Updated rules
    • Advanced storyline (10 years further)
    • Full comprehensive scratchforce rules (!)
    • Full campaign system
    • Uber huge battle terrain table (D1000)
    • New additional races plus all the originals
    • Plus lots more

This is just off the top of my head. I’m currenly planning it to be a large hardback book for ease of handling and stocking (plus VOR always deserved a hardback dammit!). Obviously new miniatures are vital but the core game needs to be refreshed and available first and foremost.

Cool. Best of luck! I’ll buy this before I buy 40k 5th. Time to dust off the old Union models (which actually have gotten a fair amount of use in other systems…)

    steeldragon says:

I had a heart attack and recovered from sheer happiness…

If this is released THIS year I’m going to break so many promises about staying focused on the games I’m currently playing (Hordesmachine, 40K and Infinity).

I need to check where I storaged the few growlers I had…

    evernevermore (John) says:

Well damn, this has potential - eager to see the advanced plotline too

    Talarius says:

Wow! This is HUGE news! Great to hear. My buddy and I have developed our own set of “scratchforce” rules based in large part on VOR over the last year and have had many a wistful conversation about the loss of VOR. This really made my day. Thanks! :-)

    Zac says:

No Limits is also based on Vor as well.

I wonder if Matt Wilson will do the cover art again? :-)

    ejdmo says:

Who knows? Maybe Skuzzy contacted Matt and PP and this will be their non prepaint sci-fi system.

    Yeah, I wish. :)

Not sure I understood the “red shirt” comment though. Usually that refers to a GW employee, so….

    Zac says:

Red Shirt is the name for new members to the forum there. Look next to Mike’s name and you’ll see that he is a “red shirt” as well

    ejdmo says:

    Ah. Thanks Zac.

Teach me to follow the links. Lol.

    supervike says:

That is really cool news! Does it also mean the possibility of new models?

    Zac says:

He mentions new figs and new factions

    Schogun says:

I’m curious to know what has changed to allow Skuzzy to finally re-release the game. A lot of us have been clamoring for this for years, but there was something (or someone) blocking it. Any info out there?

    Zac says:

Maybe any other outstanding rights expired?

    madzerker says:

It was paul bonner that did the coverart (of the box set at least)

    Zac says:

Matt did the cover art for the army books if I am not mistaken.

    Zac says:

Was the boxed set art of the Growlers attacking the human troops?

    Dagorlad (Alan) says:

Gonna demonstrate my n00bie-like ignorance here, but can someone please link to a site that showcases the original game please? I’ve never seen anything about it before I read this post.

    Zac says:

Boardgame Geek has a page about it

    http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/4977

    madzerker says:

ah, yeah, it was paul bonner on the box set, so the army books prolly were matt willson. It was the growlers attacking the union guys.

    Veritas says:

I always thought the Hordes Dire Trolls were total rip offs of the VOR growlers. Now I see that Matt Wilson would have even had first hand knowledge of the growlers so it becomes less and less coincidence.

Oh yea, and time to dust off my Neo Soviets!

    Tri3 says:

Would love to see many of the human older sculpts redone. The Growlers were all pretty good, but the rest of the line was rather poorly sculpted compared to what other companies are doing these days (Artizan, Copplestone, Hasslefree, Bob Olley…). It would be fantastic if Bob Olley sculpted up one of the ranges. There is so much potential for VOR, but if the sculpts aren’t good, it will not take off like it should.

    evernevermore (John) says:

I wouldnt say that the human sculpts are poor - they just show thier age and what was big then. Remember that the game was a direct competitor for 40k at its peak - the Neo Sovs especially have alot of 40k influences. Now if we could just get a Scrunt or Grymm army into the rules…

    ejdmo says:

Personally, I kinda hope that they redo all of the figures eventually. I also hope that they go for good sculptors as opposed to cheap ones.

Not that into Bob Olley personally. Great technical sculptor but I don’t like the 80’s feel that all his stuff has. Dearly hope they avoid Bob Naismith. He can do great work, but rarely does, it seems.

Tre Manor would be an awesome choice for Growlers, in my opinion. Some of the other folks working for Reaper would be good for the rest of the lines. Bobby Jackson comes to mind.

    Any other ideas anyone?

    Zac says:

I think the Humans were decent sculpts at the time but as mentioned they haven’t aged as well as the Growlers. That said, I don’t think that the Neo-Sov chemgrunts were that bad even compared to current figs.

    evernevermore (John) says:

I think the Union troopers aged the worst - the hands and faces specifically - though the Zhykee are kinda hard to tell as those things just look wierd and off proportion.

Neo Sovs just had the advantage that most anything that looked odd could be explained away as “radiation did it”

    nanite (Seth) says:

The Vor background and minis are something I have always really liked but missed out on the first time around, so never got into.

I was thisclose to buying up a bunch of Zykee on ebay though.

Man, here’s a great use for those SST armies that are collecting dust.

How do the rules compare with more recent systems (SST, Infinity, Hordesmachine)?

    PMMJ says:

Oh, man. Great news. It’s on in the fashion of Donkey Kong.

I always felt the unvierse of Vor never really got its chance to shine, hopefully this will do the job.

    larylich says:

Maybe if it completely got rid of the point based action system it would have potential. That dynamic was a huge road block to having a fast/fun game.

    evernevermore (John) says:

I actually really like the idea of points based action - both No Limits and AE-WW2 work really well and really tactically because of it. The scratchforce rules have me very curious.

The Vor universe was pretty good in the novels - all of the ones i had were well written and told you alot about the setting.

    Skuzz says:

Wow, some seriously kind comments here folks. Very much appreciated. :)

I completely agree with many of the comments here, VOR never got a chance to do its thing and FASA imploding sadly cut its life short. I aim to fix that.

Although im absolutely focused on finishing up the writing end of things for VOR 2.0 at the moment, my head is swirling with the miniature side of the equation. Would love any and all names/contact info for sculptors that may be interested or available.

Also, if you have any feedback/opinions/requests on VOR 2.0 PLEASE hit the ironwind forums and post em. Nows the time!

And no i havent been contacted by privateer press in regards to VOR so if they were interested they havent told me. Ill just not comment about the ‘dire trolls’ if you dont mind… grrr. ;)
